POWER BACK DOOR SYSTEM DETAILS


  1. FUNCTION OF MAIN COMPONENTS

    Component Function
    Power Back Door Unit Assembly Power Back Door ECU
    • Controls the power back door system in accordance with the signals received from the switches, sensors and ECU.

    • Receives the signals from the 2 Hall ICs to detect the back door position and the opening and closing speed of the back door.

    Power Back Door Motor Opens and closes the back door when actuated by the power back door ECU.
    Magnetic Clutch

    (Magnetic Clutch On)


    • Transmits the rotation of the power back door motor to the driven gear to allow power operation of the back door.

    (Magnetic Clutch Off)


    • Disconnects the power back door motor from the driven gear to allow the back door to be opened manually.

    Back Door Lock Assembly Back Door Lock Motor Locks and unlocks the back door (latch) when actuated by the power back door ECU.
    Latch Switch Detects if the back door is ajar.
    Sector Switch Detects the initial (neutral) position of the driven gear of the back door lock motor. The switch is on when the back door lock operates to the open side, and off when it operates to the close side.
    Courtesy Switch Detects whether the back door is open or closed. This switch turns on when the back door is open or ajar and turns off when the back door is closed.
    Power Back Door Control Switch The back door opens or closes when the power back door control switch in the vehicle is turned on.
    Power Back Door Closer Switch The power back door closes when the power back door closer switch (on the door jamb) is turned on (pressed).
    Power Back Door Main Switch
    • Setting this switch prohibits system operation.

    • In case that this switch has been set, it is possible to open or close the back door manually because the magnetic clutch of the power back door motor is off.

    Back Door Opener Switch The back door latch opens when the back door opener switch on the outside of the vehicle is turned on (operated).
    Buzzer (Built into Power Back Door ECU)
    • When the power back door system starts to operate, the buzzer in the power back door ECU sounds to inform the user that the system is operating.

    • The buzzers also sound if the operating conditions have not been met or if a jam is detected.

    Wireless Door Lock Buzzer When the power back door system starts to operate, the wireless door lock buzzer sound to inform the user that the system is operating.
    Power Back Door Touch Sensor (RH, LH) Detects if an object is jammed in the back door.
    Main Body ECU (Multiplex Network Body ECU) The main body ECU (multiplex network body ECU) transmits a back door lock/unlock control signal, vehicle speed signal (sent from the combination meter assembly), and a shift position P signal (sent from the ECU) to the power back door ECU via the Controller Area Network (CAN). Also, it receives a hazard request signal from the power back door ECU via CAN, and operates the turn signal flasher assembly.
    Key Transmits the power back door button signal to the door control receiver.
    Door Control Receiver Receives the power back door button signal and transmits it to the certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly).
  2. OPERATING CONDITION


    1. The power back door opens when all of the following conditions are met:


      1. The power back door main switch is on.

      2. Engine switch off or engine switch on (IG) and vehicle speed 3 km/h (2 mph) or less and shift lever in P.

      3. Back door opening angle is less than half-way.

      4. Any door is unlock.

    2. The power back door closes when all of the following conditions are met:


      1. The back door main switch is on.

      2. Engine switch off or on (IG)

      3. Back door closing angle less than half-way.

      4. The touch sensor is normal.

  3. SYSTEM CONTROL


    1. This system performs the function listed below.

      Function Outline
      Opener Function Upon receiving an on signal from the power back door control switch or the power back door button on the key with the door unlocked, the power back door ECU actuates the back door lock motor and the power back door motor in order to release the latch of the back door lock and open the back door.
      One-motion Opener Function* Upon receiving an on signal from the power back door button on the key with the back door locked, the power back door ECU actuates the back door lock motor and the power back door motor in order to release the latch of the back door lock and open the back door.
      Closer Function Upon receiving an on signal from the power back door control switch, the power back door closer switch or the power back door button on the key, with the back door open, the power back door ECU actuates the power back door motor and the back door lock motor in order to close the back door and engage the latch of the back door lock.
      Jam Protection Function Upon receiving the signals from a touch sensor or the Hall ICs of the power back door motor, if the power back door ECU detects that an object is jammed in the back door, it reverses the movement of the power back door motor. The buzzer in the power back door ECU sounds twice for 0.13 seconds when a jammed object is detected.
      Reverse Control Function

      During a power back door operation, if the power back door ECU detects an on signal from the power back door control switch, back door opener switch or the power back door button on the key, the power back door ECU sounds the power back door ECU and wireless door lock buzzers for approximately 0.2 seconds and reverses the power back door motor in order to reverse the back door to a predetermined position.

      If the power back door control switch is pressed while the back door is operating, the system will switch to manual operation and the buzzer will sound.

      Back Door Open/Close Speed Control Function

      In accordance with the signals received from the Hall ICs, the power back door ECU performs the following controls:


      • It reduces the closing speed from approximately 330 mm (13.0 in.) before the back door is fully closed, in order to reduce the jamming load.

      • It reduces the opening speed from approximately 250 mm (9.8 in.) before the back door is fully open, in order to reduce the shock that occurs when the door reaches the fully open position.

    2. Jam Protection Function


      1. The power back door ECU determines a jam based on the operation of the power back door and reverses the operation of the back door.

        The back door is reversed when one of the following conditions is met:


        • Jam condition detected through Hall IC signal.

        • Lock condition detected through Hall IC signal.

        • Jam condition detected through a touch sensor.

        Depending on detection timing, the close operation is cancelled and the buzzer in the power back door ECU sounds. → Back door is reversed (door is opened).
        During Lock

        The back door is reversed when either of the following conditions is met:


        • Lock condition detected through Hall IC signal.

        • Jam condition detected through a touch sensor.

        Depending on detection timing, the close operation is cancelled, the buzzer in the power back door ECU sounds and the lock is released. → Back door is reversed (door is opened).
        Open

        The back door is reversed when either of the following conditions is met:


        • Jam condition detected through Hall IC signal.

        • Lock condition detected through Hall IC signal.

        Depending on detection timing, the open operation is cancelled and the buzzer in the power back door ECU sounds. → Back door is reversed (door is closed).
  4. CONSTRUCTION


    1. Power Back Door Touch Sensor


      1. The power back door touch sensor consists of conductive rubber and a core wire. When the conductive rubber is compressed its resistance value goes down and electric current flows through the core wire. This signal is input to the power back door ECU, which determines the back door condition.

  5. OPERATION


    1. Opener Operation

      Step System Operation
      (1) The power back door control switch or the power back door button on the key is turned on for 0.8 seconds or more with the back door unlocked.
      (2)

      The power back door ECU and wireless door lock buzzers sound for 0.8 seconds. The hazard warning lights will flash twice simultaneously with the start of the operation.

      (3) The back door lock motor operates to release the latch.
      (4) Through the state of the courtesy switch, the power back door ECU detects that the latch has been released, and actuates the power back door motor to start opening the back door.
      (5) Through the state of the latch switch, the power back door ECU detects that the back door is open, and reverses the back door lock motor to its initial position.
      (6) Through the state of the sector switch, the power back door ECU detects that the back door lock motor has returned to its initial position. Then, it stops the back door lock motor.
      (7) Through the Hall ICs of the power back door motor, the power back door ECU detects the back door position, and stops the power back door motor just before the back door reaches the fully open position, and turns off the magnetic clutch.

    2. One-motion Opener Function

      Step System Operation
      (1) The power back door button on the key is turned on for 1 second or more with the back door locked.
      (2)

      The power back door ECU and wireless door lock buzzers sound for 0.8 seconds.

      The hazard warning lights will flash twice simultaneously with the start of the operation.

      (3) The back door lock motor operates to release the latch.
      (4) Through the state of the courtesy switch, the power back door ECU detects that the latch has been released, and actuates the power back door motor to start opening the back door.
      (5) Through the state of the latch switch, the power back door ECU detects that the back door is open, and reverses the back door lock motor to its initial position.
      (6) Through the state of the sector switch, the power back door ECU detects that the back door lock motor has returned to its initial position. Then, it stops the back door lock motor.
      (7) Through the Hall ICs of the power back door motor, the power back door ECU detects the back door position, and stops the power back door motor just before the back door reaches the fully open position, and turns off the magnetic clutch.

    3. Closer Function

      Step System Operation
      (1) The power back door control switch, the power back door closer switch, or the power back door button on the key is turned on for 1 second or more with the back door open, or the back door is manually closed to a predetermined position.
      (2)

      The power back door ECU and wireless door lock buzzers sound for 0.8 seconds.

      The hazard warning lights will flash twice simultaneously with the start of the operation.*

      (3) The power back door ECU actuates the power back door motor to start closing the back door.
      (4) Upon detecting that the latch is disengaged through the state of the latch switch, the power back door ECU actuates the back door lock motor to engage the latch.
      (5) Upon detecting that the back door has closed through the state of the courtesy switch, the power back door ECU stops the magnetic clutch and the power back door motor.
      (6) Upon detecting that the latch has been engaged through the state of the latch switch (on → off), the power back door ECU operates the back door lock motor forward in order to fully close the back door.
      (7) If the power back door ECU detects that the pawl switch has turned off after the back door has fully closed, it stops the back door lock motor. Then, it operates the back door lock motor in reverse until the sector switch turns on.

  6. FAIL-SAFE


    1. If the power back door ECU detects any of the malfunctions listed below during power back door operation, the power back door ECU stops the power back door motor and sounds the buzzer in the power back door ECU simultaneously, then turns off the magnetic clutch and stops the system.


      1. Open circuit in a touch sensor.

      2. The power back door motor is operated continuously for 30 seconds or more.

      3. Abnormal back door position signal (Hall IC signal).

      4. Abnormality with switches in the back door lock assembly.

  7. DIAGNOSIS


    1. If the power back door ECU detects a malfunction in the power back door system, the power back door ECU stores a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) and information related to the fault in the main body ECU (multiplex network body ECU) via the CAN. For details, refer to the Repair Manual.
