LANE-KEEPING ASSIST SYSTEM GENERAL

  1. OUTLINE

    1. The lane-keeping assist system uses a lane recognition camera sensor assembly to detect lane markers on the road surface, assists the driver's steering operation by using the Electric Power Steering (EPS), and activates the lane departure warning when needed.

    2. The lane-keeping assist system is controlled by the driving support ECU assembly.

  2. PRECAUTION

    CAUTION:

    • The lane-keeping assist system gives information to the driver and assists the driver's steering operations in accordance with road conditions and driving conditions. The driver is always required to correct the vehicle path while paying attention to road conditions and traffic. Operation of the steering wheel is the responsibility of the driver.

    • The lane-keeping assist system uses the lane recognition camera sensor assembly, installed in the front, to detect lane markers. If the sensor does not sufficiently detect lane markers, the system will not operate. In addition, if lane markers cannot be properly detected, unnecessary steering force may be applied or the buzzer may sound, so that the driver is required to operate the steering wheel manually.

    • The lane-keeping assist system is a system that operates by detecting lane markers when the LKA main switch is on while driving at approximately 48 km/h (30 mph) or higher. However, depending on the road conditions or the driving conditions, the system may not be able to be activated or the system may be suspended.

    • When the system detects a fault, the buzzer sounds and a warning message will appear to alert the driver and the system will stop operating. Although the system stops operating, this does not interrupt normal driving and keep driving carefully. The vehicle should be repaired if any error alert is output repeatedly.

    1. General Handling Precautions

      1. Turn the LKA main switch off under the following conditions. The lane-keeping assist system may mistakenly detect lane markers and may not function appropriately.

        • Light reflective tape is wrapped around poles for lane marking.

        • Marks that may be mistakenly recognized as lane markers are on the roadside structure.

      2. The lane-keeping assist system does not operate under the following condition:

        • There are no lane markers on the road.

      3. The lane-keeping assist system may not be able to appropriately detect lane markers and may not function appropriately under the following conditions:

        • There is snow remaining in ruts on the road surface.

        • The lane makers are in shadow or there are shadows on the road surface near to/parallel to the lane markers.

        • There are objects that may be mistakenly recognized as lane markers, such as guardrails, curbstones or reflection poles.

        • Lane markers that are no longer in use or traces of asphalt repair remain.

        • When travelling on branch roads or through intersections.

      4. The lane-keeping assist system may not be able to appropriately detect lane markers and may not function appropriately or may only operate intermittently under the following conditions:

        • When there are unclear lane markers or yellow lane markers, or when botts' dots or cat's eyes are used as lane markers.

        • When lane markers are invisible or hard to see due to problems such as clouds of sand.

        • When the road surface is a bright color, for example, concrete roads.

        • When the road surface is reflecting bright sunlight.

        • When the brightness changes suddenly, for example, at tunnel entrances or exits.

        • When the headlights of an oncoming vehicle or sunlight is shining on the lane recognition camera sensor assembly.

        • When driving in bad weather such as rain or snow.

        • When there is ice or snow on the road surface.

        • When the road surface is wet due to rain etc.

        • When the distance between vehicles is extremely short.

        • When the vehicle is bouncing due to being driven on a rough or uneven road surface.

        • When vehicle posture or vehicle height has changed due to suspension modifications.

        • When an object that may reflect on the windshield glass is placed on the instrument panel.

        • When the windshield glass in front of the lane recognition camera sensor assembly is dirty.

      5. Observe the following to properly operate the system. Otherwise, lane markers cannot be properly detected and the system may not operate or may not function properly.

        • Do not place any obstacles in front of the lane recognition camera sensor.

        • Set the inner rear view mirror at an angle where it will not block the front area of the lane recognition camera sensor assembly.

        • Do not touch the camera lens.

        • Do not remove the lane recognition camera sensor assembly. The angle of the lane recognition camera sensor assembly is precisely adjusted. If removed and installed, the lane recognition camera sensor angle must be adjusted.

        • Do not apply excessive force to the lane recognition camera sensor assembly.

      6. System performance cannot be sufficiently ensured under the following conditions:

        • Tires or wheels that are not genuine Lexus parts are used.

        • Driving in strong cross winds.

        • Driving on a road with a gradient.

      7. Do not activate the lane-keeping assist system under any of the following conditions:

        • When winter tires, spare tires or tires with chains are being used.

        • When driving with any parts installed that may cause vehicle driving performance to differ from that of a vehicle that meets all original equipment specifications.

        • When driving with a trailer attached.

      8. Caution should be observed because the driver may not notice alert sounds if there are loud noises inside or surrounding the cabin.

      9. If the temperature inside the cabin rises, the system may not operate.
