This engine uses the Direct Ignition System (DIS), Variable Valve Timing-intelligent by Electric motor (VVT-iE) control, Variable Valve Timing-intelligent (VVT-i) control, Electronic Throttle Control System-intelligent (ETCS-i) and Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system employing a highly efficient EGR cooler. These systems achieve improved engine performance, fuel economy and clean emissions.

      1. The 1ND-TV TOYOTA Direct injection 4-stroke common-rail Diesel (D-4D) engine is an in-line, 4-cylinder, 1.4-liter, 8-valve SOHC turbocharged diesel engine with intercooler.

      2. This engine uses direct injection system and common-rail system to realize higher performance, good fuel consumption, clean emission, low noise and low vibration.

      3. This engine comes in 2 models. One is a model with the oxidation catalyst that uses only an oxidation catalyst. The other is a model with the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) catalyst that uses a NOx Storage Reduction (NSR) catalyst and a DPF catalyst.

    5. Stop and Start System


      1. The stop and start system has been developed to achieve low emissions and enhance fuel economy.

      2. The stop and start system automatically stops the engine when the vehicle comes to a stop, such as when the vehicle stops at a red traffic light. When starting off, the engine is automatically restarted without requiring the driver to do anything extra.
