STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY INSTALLATION

Tech Tips


  • Use the same procedure for RHD and LHD vehicles.

  • The procedure listed below is for LHD vehicles.


  1. INSTALL NO. 2 STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY

      Align the matchmarks on the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly and steering column assembly.

    2. A01INH5

      Install the bolt.

      Torque:
      35 N*m  { 360 kgf*cm, 26 ft.*lbf }
  2. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN PROTECTOR (for Manual Transaxle RHD)


    1. A01IOQ5

      Install the steering column protector to the steering column assembly with the bolt.

      Torque:
      25 N*m  { 255 kgf*cm, 18 ft.*lbf }
  3. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY

      *1 Collar
      *2 Bushing

      Check that the 2 bushings are securely installed to the steering column assembly.

      Tech Tips

      If the bushings are missing or damaged, replace the steering column assembly with a new one.

    2. A01ISPA

      Install the steering column assembly with the bolt and 2 nuts.

      Torque:
      for bolt
      36 N*m  { 367 kgf*cm, 27 ft.*lbf }
      for nut
      25 N*m  { 255 kgf*cm, 18 ft.*lbf }

      Note


      • Do not damage the 2 bushings.

      • Do not line-up the bolt hole by prying on the bushings. Only install the bolt straight, without applying any force to the bushings.

    3. A01IR86

      Connect the connector and attach the connector clamp.

    4. Install the bolt.

      Torque:
      8.4 N*m  { 85 kgf*cm, 74 in.*lbf }
    5. A01ITID

      Connect the power steering ECU connector.

  4. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD

  5. CONNECT NO. 2 STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY

      Align the matchmarks on the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft assembly and steering intermediate shaft assembly.

    2. A01IQQD

      Install the bolt.

      Torque:
      35 N*m  { 360 kgf*cm, 26 ft.*lbf }
  6. INSTALL BRAKE PEDAL SUPPORT SUB-ASSEMBLY


    1. A01ISXK

      Install the nut to the brake pedal support sub-assembly.

      *B for RHD

      Install the brake pedal support sub-assembly with the 4 nuts. Tighten the 4 nuts uniformly in alphabetical order.

      Torque:
      13 N*m  { 130 kgf*cm, 9 ft.*lbf }

      Install the brake pedal support sub-assembly to the instrument panel reinforcement with the bolt.

      Torque:
      24 N*m  { 241 kgf*cm, 17 ft.*lbf }
  7. INSTALL LOWER NO. 1 INSTRUMENT PANEL AIRBAG ASSEMBLY


    1. Install the lower No. 1 instrument panel airbag assembly Click here.

  8. INSTALL INSTRUMENT PANEL SAFETY PAD SUB-ASSEMBLY


    1. Install the upper instrument panel sub-assembly Click here.

  9. INSTALL COLUMN HOLE COVER SILENCER SHEET

      Install the column hole cover silencer sheet with the 2 clips.

    2. Install the floor carpet.

  10. INSTALL COMBINATION SWITCH ASSEMBLY WITH SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY

      *1 Clamp
      *2 Claw

      Using pliers, pinch the clamp and attach the claw to install the combination switch assembly with spiral cable sub-assembly to the steering column assembly.

    2. Connect the connectors to the combination switch assembly with spiral cable sub-assembly.

  11. INSTALL UPPER STEERING COLUMN COVER

    Note

    If the steering column cover is installed in an incorrect order, it will not be possible to assemble the steering column cover.


    1. A01IRRJ

      Attach the claw and 2 pins to install the upper steering column cover.

  12. INSTALL LOWER STEERING COLUMN COVER


    1. A01IRAC

      Attach the 2 claws and install the steering column lower cover as shown in the illustration.

    2. A01IR2N

      Attach the 4 claws.

    3. A01IPH0

      Attach the claw.

      Tech Tips

      Press the area around the claw to attach it.

  13. ADJUST SPIRAL CABLE


    1. Turn the ignition switch off.

    2. Disconnect the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal.

      CAUTION:

      Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to disable the SRS system.

    3. A01IUFO

      Rotate the spiral cable counterclockwise slowly by hand until it feels firm.

      CAUTION:

      Do not turn the spiral cable by the airbag wire harness.

    4. A01ITLH

      Rotate the spiral cable clockwise approximately 2.5 turns to align the marks.

      CAUTION:

      Do not turn the spiral cable by the airbag wire harness.

      Tech Tips

      The spiral cable can be rotated approximately 2.5 turns to both the left and right from the center.

  14. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY

      Align the matchmarks on the steering wheel assembly and steering main shaft.

    2. Install the steering wheel assembly set nut.

      Torque:
      50 N*m  { 510 kgf*cm, 37 ft.*lbf }
    3. Connect the connectors to the spiral cable sub-assembly.

  15. INSTALL STEERING PAD


    1. A01INT0

      Support the steering pad with one hand.

    2. Connect the connector to the steering pad.

      Note

      When handling the airbag connector, take care not to damage the airbag wire harness.

    3. Connect the horn connector.

    4. Attach the 2 springs to install the steering pad.

  16. INSPECT STEERING WHEEL CENTER POINT

  17. CONNECT CABLE TO NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL

    When disconnecting the cable, some systems need to be initialized after the cable is reconnected Click here.

  18. CHECK SRS WARNING LIGHT


    1. Check the SRS warning light Click here.
