DESCRIPTION
The VVT (Variable Valve Timing) system is composed of an ECM, camshaft timing oil control valve assembly, camshaft timing gear assembly (for intake side), and camshaft timing gear assembly (for exhaust side). This VVT system controls the operation of camshaft timing gear assembly (for intake and exhaust sides) to obtain optimum valve timing according to the driving conditions based on various sensor signals such as intake air volume, throttle position, and engine coolant temperature. The ECM controls the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly based on these signals, obtaining the optimum relative positions of the camshafts, in turn improving fuel economy, emission efficiency, and achieving higher output. In addition, the ECM detects the actual valve timing based on the signal from the camshaft position sensor and performs feedback control to obtain ideal valve timing.
| DTC No. | DTC Detection Condition | Trouble Area |

| P0016 | Intake camshaft position has slipped from the threshold for 1 second (bank 1). (2 trip detection logic) |
|
| P0017 | Exhaust camshaft position has slipped from the threshold for 5 seconds (bank 1). (2 trip detection logic) |
|
| P0018 | Intake camshaft position has slipped from the threshold for 1 second (bank 2). (2 trip detection logic) |
|
| P0019 | Exhaust camshaft position has slipped from the threshold for 5 seconds (bank 2). (2 trip detection logic) |

MONITOR DESCRIPTION
To monitor the correlation of the intake camshaft position and crankshaft position, the ECM checks the VVT neutral position against the VVT learning value while coasting. If the VVT neutral position is out of the specified VVT learning value range in driving cycles, the ECM illuminates the MIL and stores DTC P0016 (bank 1) or P0018 (bank 2).
To monitor the correlation of the exhaust camshaft position and crankshaft position, the ECM checks the VVT neutral position against VVT learning value while idling. If the VVT neutral position is out of the specified VVT learning value range in driving cycles, the ECM illuminates the MIL and stores DTC P0017 (bank 1) or P0019 (bank 2).
CONFIRMATION DRIVING PATTERN
Connect the GTS to the DLC3.
Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the GTS on.
Clear DTCs (even if no DTCs are stored, perform the clear DTC operation) Click here.
Turn the ignition switch off and wait for at least 30 seconds.
Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the GTS on.
Start the engine and warm it up until the engine coolant temperature reaches 75°C (167°F) or higher.
With the vehicle stationary, depress the accelerator pedal and maintain an engine speed of between 2500 and 3000 rpm for 40 seconds or more [A].
When the engine speed exceeds 50 km/h {31.1 MPH}, release the accelerator pedal, brake pedal, and clutch pedal to decelerate without shifting down. Make sure to select the optimum gear in advance so that the engine speed is maintained between 2500 rpm and 1200 rpm for more than 3 seconds [B].
CAUTION:
When performing the confirmation driving pattern, obey all speed limits and traffic laws.
Stop the vehicle.
Idle the engine for 5 minutes or more [C].
Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes.
Read pending DTCs.
Tech Tips
If a pending DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.
If a pending DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.
Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Utility / All Readiness.
Input the DTC: P0016, P0017, P0018 or P0019.
Check the DTC judgment result.
| GTS Display | Description |

Tech Tips
If the judgment result shows NORMAL, the system is normal.
If the judgment result shows ABNORMAL, the system has a malfunction.
If the test result is INCOMPLETE or N/A and no DTC is output, perform a universal trip and check for permanent DTCs Click here.
Tech Tips
If a permanent DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.
If no permanent DTC is output, the system is normal.

CAUTION / NOTICE / HINT
Tech Tips
If DTC P0016 or P0017 is displayed, check the intake camshaft circuit for the right bank VVT system (bank 1).
If DTC P0018 or P0019 is displayed, check the intake camshaft circuit for the left bank VVT system (bank 2).
Bank 1 refers to the bank that includes the No. 1 cylinder*.
*: The No. 1 cylinder is the cylinder which is farthest from transmission.
Bank 2 refers to the bank that does not include the No. 1 cylinder.
Read freeze frame data using the GTS. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.
PROCEDURE
CHECK ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P0016, P0017, P0018 OR P0019)
Connect the GTS to the DLC3.
Turn the ignition switch to ON.
Turn the GTS on.
Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes.
Read DTCs.

| DTC P0016, P0017, P0018 or P0019 and other DTCs are output | B |
Tech Tips
If any DTCs other than P0016, P0017, P0018 or P0019 are output, troubleshoot those DTCs first.
