POWER STEERING SYSTEM (for 2GR-FXE) FAIL-SAFE CHART

If the power steering ECU detects a malfunction, the power steering ECU continues operating the power assist under special conditions, or stops the power assist altogether in order to protect the system.

If a problem occurs in the power steering system, power steering assist is stopped, locked at a particular point, or decreased simultaneously to protect the system.

Power Steering System Fail-safe Operation
Malfunction Fail-safe Operation

  • Power steering converter malfunction

  • Torque sensor malfunction

  • Power steering motor temperature malfunction

  • Power steering motor short to ground malfunction (includes motor drive malfunctions)

  • Power steering motor overcurrent malfunction

  • Motor rotation angle sensor malfunction

  • Power steering ECU malfunction

Power steering assist stops or assist amount is limited

  • Vehicle speed signal malfunction

  • READY signal malfunction

  • Power source voltage low

Power steering assist is temporarily limited (normal power assist is restored after system returns to normal)

Tech Tips

  • With the vehicle stopped or driving very slowly, if the steering wheel is turned repeatedly or turned to a lock position and the vehicle is driven for an extended period of time, the amount of power assist is decreased to prevent overheating of the motor and ECU. If this occurs, turn the power switch on (READY) and do not turn the steering wheel for approximately 10 minutes to improve the power assist a little.

  • If the auxiliary battery is not sufficiently charged or the voltage decreases temporarily, the amount of power assist is reduced and the power steering warning light comes on. In such cases, the amount of power assist returns to normal when the auxiliary battery voltage recovers.
