HYBRID TRANSMISSION FLUID ADJUSTMENT

  1. BEFORE REFILLING TRANSMISSION

    • This transmission requires Toyota Genuine ATF WS.

    • After servicing the transmission, you must refill the transmission with the correct amount of fluid.

    • Maintain the vehicle in a horizontal position while adjusting the fluid level.

    • If fluid has seeped out or an oil cooler hose has been disconnected, proceed to "FILL TRANSMISSION PAN". If any of the entire transmission, transmission pan, drain plug, transmission wire or oil pressure switches is replaced, proceed to "FILL TRANSMISSION".

    • If the entire transmission is replaced, proceed to the "PERFORM FLUID CIRCULATION" procedure.

      Tech Tips

New transmissions are already filled with transmission fluid.

  2. FILL TRANSMISSION PAN WITH FLUID

    Note

    • Fill with ATF while the transmission is at normal operating temperature.

    • After filling ATF, adjust the fluid level.

    1. Lift the vehicle up while keeping the vehicle level.

      Note

Set the vehicle on a lift so that the vehicle is kept level when it is lifted up (make sure that the tilt angle from the front to rear of the vehicle is within +/- 1°).

    2. Remove the front suspension member brace Click here.

    3. Remove the No. 2 engine under cover Click here.

    4. A01FRD9

      Disconnect the oil cooler hose.

      Note

Do not touch any parts that may be hot, such as the exhaust pipe.

      Tech Tips

Cover the disconnected oil cooler hose with a plastic bag or tape to prevent fluid from dripping.

    5. A01FVTX

Add fluid until it comes out of the disconnected oil cooler hose.

      Note

      Use Toyota Genuine ATF WS.

      Tech Tips

Specified amount of fluid is 5.0 liters (5.3 US qts, 4.4 Imp qts).

    6. A01FRD9

      Connect the oil cooler hose.

      Note

Be sure to adjust the fluid level after adding fluid.

      Tech Tips

      Proceed to "PERFORM FLUID CIRCULATION".

  3. FILL TRANSMISSION

      Note

      Use Toyota Genuine ATF WS.

    9. A01FRD9

      Connect the oil cooler hose.

      Note

Be sure to adjust the fluid level after adding fluid.

      Tech Tips

      Proceed to "PERFORM FLUID CIRCULATION"

  4. PERFORM FLUID CIRCULATION

    1. Allow the engine to idle with the air conditioning OFF.

    2. Move the shift lever through the entire gear range to circulate fluid.

    3. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Hybrid Control / Data List / T/M Oil Temperature and Line Pressure.

    4. Check T/M Oil Temperature and Line Pressure.

    5. Before adjusting the fluid amount, make sure that Line Pressure is OFF with the power switch on (READY).

      Standard
      Line Pressure: OFF

      Note

      • If Line Pressure is ON, the fluid amount cannot be adjusted accurately.

      • If Line Pressure is still ON even after the power switch has been turned on (READY), troubleshoot the system in accordance with the output DTC. Adjust the fluid amount only after making sure that Line Pressure is OFF.

    6. After adjusting the fluid amount, make sure that Line Pressure remains OFF with the power switch on (READY).

      Standard
      Line Pressure: OFF

      Note

      • If Line Pressure is ON, the fluid amount has not been adjusted accurately.

      • Turn the power switch on (READY) or troubleshoot the system in accordance with the output DTC. Then adjust the fluid amount only after making sure that Line Pressure is OFF.

    7. Allow the engine to idle until the fluid temperature reaches 30°C (86°F). Proceed to the next step to check fluid temperature.

      Tech Tips

The fluid temperature should be less than 40°C (104°F) before starting the engine.

  5. CHECK FLUID TEMPERATURE

    Note

    • The fluid temperature can be confirmed by checking the D shift indicator in the meter or using the GTS. It is necessary to change to fluid temperature detection mode.

    Tech Tips

    • The fluid temperature should be less than 30°C (86°F) before beginning the fluid temperature check.

    • Fluid temperature detection mode will be canceled if the power switch is turned off.

    1. When using the GTS:

      1. Turn the power switch off.

      2. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

      3. Turn the power switch on (READY).

        Note

Check that electrical systems such as the air conditioning system, audio system and lighting system are off.

      4. Turn the GTS on.

      5. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Hybrid Control / Active Test / Connect the TC and TE1 / ON.

      6. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Hybrid Control / Data List / T/M Oil Temperature and Line Pressure.

      7. Check Line Pressure.

        Standard
        Line Pressure: OFF

        Note

        • Make sure that Line Pressure is OFF.

      8. Move the shift lever from P to D.

      9. Move the shift lever to D, and quickly move back and forth between N and D (once within 1.5 seconds) for at least 6 seconds. This will activate fluid temperature detection mode.

        Note

The D shift indicator remains illuminated for 2 seconds and then turns off.

      10. Move the shift lever to P.

      11. Push the Active Test menu: Connect TC and TE1/ OFF.

        Note

        • Make sure to turn Connect TC and TE1 off. If it is not turned off, the fluid level will not be adjusted correctly.

        • If Connect TC and TE1 is not turned off, the fluid temperature may quickly exceed the allowable temperature adjustment range.

    2. When not using the GTS (Using the D shift indicator):

      3. Move the shift lever from P to D.

      4. Move the shift lever back and forth between N and D at 1.5 second intervals for 6 seconds.

      5. Move the shift lever to D, and quickly move back and forth between N and D (once within 1.5 seconds) for at least 6 seconds. This will activate fluid temperature detection mode.

        Note

The D shift indicator remains illuminated for 2 seconds and then turns off.

      6. Move the shift lever to P.

      7. Disconnect SST from the DLC3.

        Note

        • Make sure to disconnected terminals TC and CG. If they are not disconnected, the fluid level will not be adjusted correctly.

        • If terminals TC and CG are not disconnected, the fluid temperature may quickly exceed the allowable temperature adjustment range.

    3. Allow the engine to idle until the fluid temperature reaches 30 to 40°C (86 to 104°F).

    4. The D shift indicator will come on again when the fluid temperature reaches 46°C (115°F) and will blink when it exceeds 51°C (124°F).

      Tech Tips

Adjust the transmission fluid level when the "D" shift position indicator is illuminated.

      • If the "D" shift position indicator is not illuminated, idle the engine to warm it up until the "D" shift position indicator illuminates.

      • If the "D" shift position indicator is illuminated, immediately begin to adjust the fluid level.

      • If the "D" shift position indicator is blinking, stop the engine to cool the fluid. Once the fluid temperature drops to the appropriate level, perform the fluid level adjustment procedure again.
