BRAKE PEDAL ADJUSTMENT


  1. CHECK AND ADJUST BRAKE PEDAL HEIGHT

    Tech Tips

    Check and adjust the brake pedal height with the floor carpet folded back.

      Check the pedal height.

      Standard pedal height from floor panel
      Item Specified Condition
      for LHD (2WD) 158.4 to 168.4 mm (6.24 to 6.62 in.)
      for LHD (AWD) 170.0 to 180.0 mm (6.70 to 7.08 in.)
      for RHD 158.4 to 168.4 mm (6.24 to 6.62 in.)

    2. Adjust the brake pedal height.


      1. Disconnect the connector from the stop light switch assembly.

      2. Loosen the stop light switch lock nut, and then turn the stop light switch to allow for pedal free play.

      3. Loosen the push rod clevis lock nut.

      4. Adjust the pedal height by turning the push rod.

        Standard pedal height from floor panel

        for LHD (2WD) 158.4 to 168.4 mm (6.24 to 6.62 in.)
        for LHD (AWD) 170.0 to 180.0 mm (6.70 to 7.08 in.)
        for RHD 158.4 to 168.4 mm (6.24 to 6.62 in.)

      5. Tighten the lock nut.

        Torque:
        26 N*m  { 265 kgf*cm, 19 ft.*lbf }

        *a 0.87 to 2.4 mm (0.0343 to 0.0944 in.)

        Check the switch clearance.

        Standard stop light switch clearance
        0.87 to 2.4 mm (0.0343 to 0.0944 in.)

      7. Tighten the stop light switch lock nut.

        Torque:
        17 N*m  { 173 kgf*cm, 13 ft.*lbf }

        Note

        Do not depress the pedal.

      8. Connect the connector to the stop light switch assembly.

  2. CHECK BRAKE PEDAL FREE PLAY

      Stop the engine. Depress the pedal several times until there is no vacuum in the booster. Then release the pedal.

    2. Depress the pedal until resistance is felt.

    3. Check the pedal free play by measuring the distance between the position in the previous step and the pedal released position.

      Standard pedal free play
      1.0 to 2.0 mm (0.0394 to 0.0787 in.)

      Tech Tips

      Check the brake pedal free play at the same location as that used when checking the brake pedal height.

    4. Check the switch clearance.

      Standard stop light switch clearance
      0.87 to 2.4 mm (0.0343 to 0.0944 in.)

  3. CHECK BRAKE PEDAL RESERVE DISTANCE


    1. Release the parking brake pedal. Start the engine.

    2. Depress the pedal and check the pedal reserve distance.

      Pedal reserve distance from floor panel at 500 N (51 kgf, 112 lbf)

      for 2WD More than 115 mm (4.53in.)
      for AWD More than 126 mm (4.96 in.)

      If the distance is not as specified, troubleshoot the brake system.

      Tech Tips

      Check the brake pedal reserve distance at the same location as that used when checking the brake pedal height.
