AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID ADJUSTMENT

  1. BEFORE FILLING TRANSMISSION

    • This transmission requires Toyota Genuine ATF WS.

    • It is necessary to refill the transmission with the correct amount of fluid.

    • The vehicle must remain level while adjusting the transmission fluid level.

  2. FILL TRANSMISSION PAN WITH FLUID

    1. Lift the vehicle.

      Note

Set the vehicle on a lift so that the vehicle is kept level when it is lifted up (make sure that the tilt angle from the front to rear of the vehicle is within +/- 1°).

    2. Remove the suspension member brace.

Fill the transmission through the refill hole until fluid begins to trickle out of the overflow tube.

    7. Wait until the fluid flow slows and only drops come out.

    8. Temporarily install the gasket and overflow plug.

      Tech Tips

Reuse the old gasket. the overflow plug will be removed again to adjust the fluid level.

  3. FILL TRANSMISSION

    1. Fill the transmission with the correct amount of fluid as listed in the table below.

      Standard Capacity
      Performed Repair Fill Amount
Transmission oil pan and drain plug removal 1.4 liters (1.5 US qts, 1.2 Imp. qts)
Transmission valve body removal 2.5 liters (2.6 US qts, 2.2 Imp. qts)
Torque converter removal 4.0 liters (4.2 US qts, 3.5 Imp. qts)
Entire transmission assembly 7.5 liters (7.9 US qts, 6.7 Imp. qts)
    2. Temporarily install the O-ring and refill plug to avoid fluid splash.

      Tech Tips

      • Reuse the old O-ring. the refill plug will be removed again to adjust the fluid level.

      • If you cannot add the listed amount of fluid, do the following:

        1. Install the refill plug.

        2. Allow the engine to idle with the air conditioning off.

        3. Move the shift lever through entire gear range to circulate fluid.

        4. Wait for 30 seconds with the engine idling.

        5. Stop the engine.

        6. Remove the refill plug and add fluid.

        7. Reinstall the refill plug.

  4. CHECK FLUID TEMPERATURE

    Note

The fluid temperature can be confirmed by checking the D shift indicator in the meter or using the GTS. It is necessary to change to fluid temperature detection mode.

    Tech Tips

The fluid temperature should be less than 30°C (86°F) before beginning the fluid temperature check.

    1. When using the GTS:

      1. Turn the engine switch off.

      2. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

      3. Turn the engine switch on (IG).

        Note

        • Do not start the engine yet.

        • Check that electrical systems such as the air conditioning system, audio system and lighting system are off.

      4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / ECT / Active Test / Connect the TC and TE1.

      5. Select the item Data List / A/T Oil Temperature 1.

      6. Check A/T Oil Temperature 1.

        Note

        • If the fluid temperature is below 51°C (124°F), proceed to the next step. (Recommended ATF temperature 46°C (115°F) or less)

        • If the fluid temperature is 51°C (124°F) or more, turn the engine switch off and wait until the fluid temperature drops below 46°C (115°F).

      7. Push the active test menu: Connect the TC and TE1 / ON.

      8. Start the engine.

When not using the GTS (using the D shift indicator):

      1. Connect terminals CG (4) and TC (13) of the DLC3 using SST.

        SST
        09843-18040
      2. Start the engine.

        Note

Check that electrical systems such as the air conditioning system, audio system and lighting system are off.

        Tech Tips

Indicator lights of the meter blink to output Trouble Codes when terminals CG (4) and TC (13) are connected.

    3. Slowly move the shift lever from P to S, select the S1 range to the S6 range and then move the shift lever to P.

    4. Move the shift lever to D, and quickly move back and forth between N and D (once within 1.5 seconds) for at least 6 seconds. This will activate fluid temperature detection mode.

      Note

D shift indicator remains illuminated for 2 seconds and then off.

    5. When using the GTS:

      1. Move the shift lever to P and press "OFF" on the Active Test display.

    6. When not using the GTS:

      1. Move the shift lever to P and disconnect terminals CG (4) and TC (13).

    7. Allow the engine to idle until the fluid temperature reaches 46 to 51°C (115 to 124°F).

    8. The D shift indicator will come on again when the fluid temperature reaches 46°C (115°F) and will blink when it exceeds 51°C (124°F).

      Tech Tips

Adjust the transmission fluid level when the "D" shift position indicator is illuminated.

      1. If the "D" shift position indicator is not illuminated, idle the engine to warm it up until the "D" shift position indicator illuminates.

      2. If the "D" shift position indicator is illuminated, immediately begin to adjust the fluid level.

      3. If the "D" shift position indicator is blinking, stop the engine to cool the fluid. Once the fluid temperature drops to the appropriate level, perform the fluid level adjustment procedure again.

      Note

If the fluid does not overflow, perform the following:

      1. Remove the refill plug and gasket.

      2. Refill the transmission through the refill hole until fluid begins to come out of the overflow tube.

      3. Wait until the overflow slows to a trickle.

  6. REFILL TRANSMISSION WITH FLUID

    1. Install the overflow plug.

    2. Stop the engine.

    3. Remove the refill plug.

    4. Add 0.4 liters (0.4 US qts, 0.4 Imp. qts) of fluid.

    5. Allow the engine to idle and wait for 10 seconds.

    6. Proceed to "Check Fluid Level".

  7. AFTER FILLING TRANSMISSION

    1. Install the overflow plug with a new gasket.

      Torque:
