DTC No. DTC Detection Condition Trouble Area
P0711

One of the following conditions (A), (B) or (C) is met:

(A) Both (a) and (b) are detected: (2-trip detection logic)

  • (a) Intake air and engine coolant temperatures are more than -15°C (5°F) at engine start

  • (b) After normal driving for over 30 min. and 16 km (9.9 mile) or more, ATF temperature is less than 20°C (68°F)

(B) Both (a) and (b) are detected: (2-trip detection logic)

  • (a) Intake air and engine coolant temperatures are more than -10°C (14°F) at engine start

  • (b) After normal driving for over 15 min. and 50 sec. and 1 km (0.6 mile) or more, ATF temperature is less than 20°C (68°F)

(C) Both (a) and (b) are detected: (2-trip detection logic)

  • (a) Engine coolant temperature is less than 35°C (95°F) at engine start

  • (b) ATF temperature is 110°C (230°F) or more when engine coolant temperature reaches 60°C (140°F)

Transmission wire (ATF temperature sensor)

MONITOR DESCRIPTION

This DTC indicates that there is a problem with output from the automatic transmission fluid (ATF) temperature sensor (TFT sensor) and that the sensor itself is defective. The ATF temperature sensor converts the ATF temperature to an electrical resistance value. Based on the resistance, the ECM determines the ATF temperature and detects an opens or shorts in the ATF temperature circuit or a fault of the ATF temperature sensor.

After running the vehicle for a certain period, the ATF temperature should increase. If the ATF temperature is below 20°C (68°F) after running the vehicle for a certain period, the ECM interprets this as a fault, and turns on the MIL.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

  1. DATA LIST

    Note

    • If DTCs P0711 and P2610 are output simultaneously, confirm that the ATF temperature is as specified in "Normal Condition" using the GTS first. When the ATF temperature is as specified in "Normal Condition", perform troubleshooting for DTC P2610 Click here.

    • In the table below, the value listed under "Normal Condition" are reference values.

    Tech Tips

Using the GTS to read the Data List allows the values or states of switches, sensors, actuators and other items to be read without removing any parts. This non-intrusive inspection can be very useful because intermittent conditions or signals may be discovered before parts or wiring is disturbed. Reading the Data List information early in troubleshooting is one way to save diagnostic time.

    1. Warm up the engine.

    2. Turn the engine switch off.

    3. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

    4. Turn the engine switch on (IG) position.

    5. Turn the GTS on.

    6. Select the item "Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List".

    7. According to the display on the GTS, read the "Data List".

      Min.: -40°C (-40°F)

      Max.: 215°C (419°F)

      • After stall test: Approximately 80°C (176°F)

      • Equal to ambient temperature when engine cold

If the value is -40°C (-40°F) or 215°C (419°F), the No. 1 ATF temperature sensor circuit is open or shorted.

      Tech Tips

When DTC P0712 is output and GTS output is 150°C (302°F) or more, there is a short circuit.

When DTC P0713 is output and GTS output is -40°C (-40°F), there is an open circuit.

Measure the resistance between terminal OIL and body ground.

      150 °C (302°F) or more Short circuit

      Tech Tips

If a circuit related to the ATF temperature sensor becomes open, P0713 is immediately set (in 0.5 second). When P0713 is set, P0711 cannot be detected.

It is not necessary to inspect the circuit when P0711 is set.

PROCEDURE

  1. CHECK OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P0711)

    1. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

    2. Turn the engine switch on (IG) position and push the GTS main switch ON.

    3. When you use GTS:

Select the item "Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes".

    4. Read the DTCs using the GTS.

      "P0711" and other DTCs B

      Tech Tips

If any other codes besides "P0711" are output, perform troubleshooting for those DTCs first.
