SFI SYSTEM, Diagnostic DTC:P0017, P0019

DTC Code DTC Name
P0017 Crankshaft Position - Camshaft Position Correlation (Bank 1 Sensor B)
P0019 Crankshaft Position - Camshaft Position Correlation (Bank 2 Sensor B)

DESCRIPTION

In the VVT (Variable Valve Timing) system, the appropriate exhaust valve open and close timing is controlled by the ECM. The ECM performs exhaust valve control by performing the following: 1) controlling the exhaust camshaft and camshaft timing oil control valve assembly (for exhaust camshaft), and operating the camshaft timing exhaust gear assembly; and 2) changing the relative positions of the camshaft and crankshaft.

DTC No. DTC Detection Condition Trouble Area
P0017 Deviation in the crankshaft position sensor signal and VVT sensor (for exhaust camshaft of bank 1) signal (2 trip detection logic).
  • Valve timing

  • Camshaft timing oil control valve assembly (for exhaust camshaft of bank 1, 2)

  • Oil control valve filter (RH, LH)

  • Oil pipe

  • Camshaft timing exhaust gear assembly (bank 1, 2)

  • ECM

P0019 Deviation in the crankshaft position sensor signal and VVT sensor (for exhaust camshaft of bank 2) signal (2 trip detection logic).

MONITOR DESCRIPTION

To monitor the correlation of the exhaust camshaft position and crankshaft position, the ECM checks the VVT learned value while the engine is idling. The VVT learned value is calibrated based on the camshaft position and crankshaft position. The exhaust valve timing is set to the most advanced angle while the engine is idling. If the VVT learned value is out of the specified range in consecutive driving cycles, the ECM stores DTC P0017 (bank 1) or P0019 (bank 2).

  7. Idle the engine for 5 minutes or more [C].

  8. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / DTC [D].

  9. Read the pending DTCs.

    Tech Tips

    • If a pending DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.

    • If a pending DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.

  10. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Utility / All Readiness.

  11. Input the DTC: P0017 or P0019.

  12. Check the DTC judgment result.

    INCOMPLETE
    • DTC judgment not completed

    • Perform driving pattern after confirming DTC enabling conditions

    N/A
    • Unable to perform DTC judgment

    • Number of DTCs which do not fulfill DTC preconditions has reached ECU memory limit

    Tech Tips

    • If the judgment result shows NORMAL, the system is normal.

    • If the judgment result shows ABNORMAL, the system has a malfunction.

    • If the judgment result shows INCOMPLETE or N/A, perform steps [E] through [G].

  13. Drive the vehicle for 2 to 3 minutes [E].

    CAUTION:

When performing the confirmation driving pattern, obey all speed limits and traffic laws.

  14. Idle the engine for 5 minutes or more [F].

  15. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / DTC [G].

  16. Read the pending DTCs.

    Tech Tips

    • If a pending DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.

    • If a pending DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.

  17. Check the DTC judgment result.

    Tech Tips

    • If the judgment result shows NORMAL, the system is normal.

    • If the judgment result shows ABNORMAL, the system has a malfunction.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

Tech Tips

  • Bank 1 refers to the bank that includes the No. 1 cylinder*.

*: The No. 1 cylinder is the cylinder which is farthest from the transaxle.

  • Bank 2 refers to the bank that does not include the No. 1 cylinder.

  • Read freeze frame data using the intelligent tester. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.

PROCEDURE

  1. CHECK ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P0017 OR P0019)

    1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

    2. Turn the engine switch on (IG).

    3. Turn the tester on.

    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / DTC.

    5. Read the DTCs.
