  1. CHECK CERTIFICATION ECU (SMART KEY ECU ASSEMBLY) (STARTING-RELATED)

    1. Disconnect the F63 and F65 certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) connectors.

    2. Measure the voltage and resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Starter relay activation output


      1. Outputs starter relay activation voltage (12 V) when engine is being started. Outputs for maximum of 30 seconds. Turns off when engine speed is 500 rpm or more for 500 ms or more.

      2. for CVT and Multi-mode Manual Transaxle:

        When engine switch is on (IG), it monitors whether park/neutral position switch is on (shift lever in P*1 or N*2) or off (shift lever not in P*1 or N*2). Outputs 12 V through large resistance in ECM. When park/neutral position switch is on, terminal STAR voltage is low (approximately 0.5 V) due to voltage division with starter relay coil resistance (small). When park/neutral position switch is off, terminal STAR voltage is high (approximately 10.5 V).

      3. for Manual Transaxle:

        When engine switch is on (IG), it monitors whether clutch start switch is on or off. When clutch start switch is on, terminal STAR voltage is low (approximately 0.5 V) due to voltage division with starter relay coil resistance (small). When clutch start switch is off, terminal STAR voltage is high (approximately 10.5 V).

      Tech Tips

      When voltage is high, start signal (STAR) is not output even if start command signal (STSW) is input.

      • *3: In order to prevent the battery from being depleted when the vehicle is shipped long distances, a fuse that cuts unnecessary electrical load while the vehicle is being shipped is set in the circuit. If the fuse is removed, the circuit becomes open. If the fuse that is between the battery and terminal CUTB is removed and the circuit is open, the certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) changes to a certain control mode (example: the transmission of electric waves every 250 ms. that form the detection area stops). If the result is not as specified, there may be a malfunction on the wire harness side or the fuse is removed.

      If the result is not as specified, there may be a malfunction in the wire harness.

    3. Reconnect the F63 and F65 certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) connectors.

    4. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Tech Tips

      When voltage is high, start signal (STAR) is not output even if start command signal (STSW) is input.

      With brake pedal*5 or clutch pedal*6 depressed, engine switch pressed and held for approx. 1 sec. (starter on) → Engine switch released (starter off) 6 V or higher*4 → 1.5 V or less

      Tech Tips


      • *1: for CVT

      • *2: When the shift lever is in P (for CVT) and the engine switch is off, if any door is opened or closed, the steering is locked. When the key is inside the vehicle and the engine switch is turned on (ACC) or on (IG), the steering unlocks.

      • *3: The steering lock motor operates when the following conditions are met and a door is opened:


        • The shift lever is in P (for CVT).

        • While carrying the electrical key transmitter, the engine switch is turned on (IG) to unlock the steering, and then the engine switch is turned off.

      • *4: When the engine is cranking, the battery voltage may momentarily drop to approximately 6 V.

      • *5: for CVT or Multi-mode Manual Transaxle

      • *6: for Manual Transaxle

    5. Using an oscilloscope, check the waveform of the ECU.
