STOP AND START SYSTEM SYSTEM DESCRIPTION


  1. STOP AND START CONTROL

    The Stop and Start system is controlled according to the following conditions, achieving appropriate engine stop and start control together with safe and smooth driving characteristics.


    1. When the conditions in the following table have been met, the engine can be stopped due to Stop and Start system control.

      Gradient of Road Surface Within the allowable gradient range (gradient of road surface below 8 degrees)
      Engine Speed 1250 rpm or less
      Hood Closed
      Battery Voltage Minimum voltage when the starter pinion is plunging is 7.6 V or more, and 8.14 V or more when cranking after the starter pinion is plunged
      Battery Temperature -10°C to 70°C (14°F to 158°F)
      Battery Integrated Current*2
      1. 0 A-sec or higher: After engine start by ignition switch operation

      2. The integrated current value has increased to 0 A-sec or higher at least once after the ignition switch is turned to ON:

        The engine is stopped until the following conditions are not met:


        • -4838 A-sec or higher: The battery charge is sufficient and the battery temperature is -1°C (30.2°F) or higher and below 70°C (158°F)

        • -864 A-sec or higher: The battery charge is insufficient and the battery temperature is below -1°C (30.2°F) or 70°C (158°F) or higher

      Air Conditioning Other than when stop and start control is prohibited
      Heater

      Either of the following conditions is met:


      • The heater is off

      • The blower switch is on when the ambient temperature is 11°C (51.8°F) or higher or the engine coolant temperature is 66°C (114.8°F) or higher

      • For 10 seconds after restarting the engine by stop and start control, when the air conditioning switch is on, or the blower switch is on.

      Tech Tips


      • *1: When the battery temperature is -15°C (5°F) or lower, or 75°C (167°F) or higher, the stop and start control is prohibited. When the battery temperature returns to -10°C (14°F) or higher, or 70°C (158°F) or lower, stop and start control is permitted.

      • *2: Read the Data List item "Integrated Current" or "Oper Permission (Integrated Current)" when checking the integrated current value ( Click here).

    2. When the engine has been stopped due to Stop and Start system control, and any of the following conditions are met, the engine will restart.

  2. SYSTEM PROHIBIT CONTROL

    The engine stop and start ECU prohibits Stop and Start system control according to the table below. The prohibition conditions are specified for each system.

    Heater:

    • Outside temperature is 10°C (50°F) or less

    • Coolant temperature is less than 55°C (131°F)

    Heater function is not effective

    Any of the following conditions have been met:


    • Coolant temperature is 55°C (131°) or more

    • Blower switch is turned off

    During heater operation

    Cooling function:

    All of the following conditions have been met:


    • Blower switch is on

    • Air conditioning switch is on

    • Outside temperature is 25°C (77°F) or more

    • Evaporator temperature is 9°C (48.2°F) or more

    Cooling function is not effective

    Any of the following conditions have been met:


    • Evaporator temperature is 9°C (48.2°F) or less

    • Blower switch is turned off

    • Air conditioning system is turned off

    While air conditioning system (cooling function) is on

    Defogger:

    All of the following conditions have been met:


    1. Defogger switch: ON

    2. 0 to 20 seconds after the engine is restarted by stop and start control when the ambient temperature is -5°C (23°F) or higher and the blower switch and air conditioning switch are on


    1. Windows are easily fogged

    2. Heater function is not effective

    3. Odor

    Any of the following conditions have been met:


    1. Defogger switch: ON

    2. Blower switch is off

    3. 0 to 20 seconds have passed after restarting the engine by the stop and start control or the air conditioning switch is off, or blower switch is off.

    While air conditioning system (cooling function for defogger) is on

    • Heavy electrical load

    • High stop and start rate (Time that engine stopped due to Stop and Start system control is long)

    Battery integrated current*1 value is more than a certain level.


    1. 0 A-sec or higher: After engine start by ignition switch operation

    2. Either of the following integrated current conditions is met:


      • -3974 A-sec or higher: The battery charge is sufficient and the battery temperature is -1°C (30.2°F) or higher and below 70°C (158°F)

      • 0 A-sec or higher:The battery charge is insufficient and the battery temperature is below -1°C (30.2°F) or 70°C (158°F) or higher

    Always
    During refresh charge A refresh charge of 30 minutes or more is performed after every 20 hours of driving Refresh charge is completed Always

    Tech Tips


    • *1: Refer to Data List items "Integrated Current" and "Battery Integrated Current" ( Click here).

    • If the battery terminal has been disconnected, the stop and start will be prohibited. In this case, drive the vehicle for 15 to 40 minutes to permit the stop and start operation.

    • Allow the engine to idle for 3 minutes after the engine warms up and check that the engine speed is within 50 rpm of the target idle speed.

  3. WARNING CONTROL

    If any of the following operations are performed while the engine is stopped due to Stop and Start system control, the system will perform the warning control.

  5. EFFECT OF MALFUNCTION ON STOP AND START SYSTEM OPERATION

    Depending on the malfunction, Stop and Start system control may be prohibited as a fail-safe function. The following table shows effects on the vehicle and areas to be inspected according to malfunctions in the Stop and Start system.
