PROCEDURE

  1. INSPECT CHAIN SUB-ASSEMBLY

    *a Measuring Area

    1. Using a spring scale, apply 140 N (14.3 kgf, 31.5 lb) to the chain sub-assembly and measure its length.

      Maximum chain elongation
      123.2 mm (4.850 in.)

If the elongation is greater than the maximum, replace the chain sub-assembly.

      Tech Tips

Perform the same measurement at 3 or more random places and calculate the average length.

  2. INSPECT NO. 1 CHAIN TENSIONER ASSEMBLY

    A005JGA

    1. Check that the plunger moves smoothly when the ratchet pawl is raised with your finger.

    2. Release the ratchet pawl and check that the plunger is locked in place by the ratchet pawl and does not move when pushed with your finger.

  3. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING GEAR ASSEMBLY

    A005GZB

    1. Wrap the chain sub-assembly around the camshaft timing gear assembly.

    2. Using a vernier caliper, measure the diameter of the camshaft timing gear assembly with the chain sub-assembly.

Standard gear diameter (with chain sub-assembly)
      97.4 mm (3.8362 in.)
Minimum gear diameter (with chain sub-assembly)
      96.2 mm (3.787 in.)

If the diameter is less than the minimum, replace the camshaft timing gear assembly.

      Note

Make sure that the vernier calipers are in contact with the chain link when measuring.

  4. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING SPROCKET

    A005L93

    1. Wrap the chain sub-assembly around the camshaft timing sprocket.

    2. Using a vernier caliper, measure the diameter of the timing gear with the chain sub-assembly.

Standard gear diameter (with chain sub-assembly)
      97.4 mm (3.8362 in.)
Minimum gear diameter (with chain sub-assembly)
      96.2 mm (3.787 in.)

If the diameter is less than the minimum, replace the camshaft timing sprocket.

      Note

Make sure that the a vernier caliper are in contact with the chain link when measuring.

  5. INSPECT CHAIN TENSIONER SLIPPER

    A005JOP

    1. Check the chain tensioner slipper.

      Minimum thickness
      1.0 mm (0.039 in.)

If the thickness is less than the minimum, replace the chain tensioner slipper.

  6. INSPECT NO. 1 CHAIN VIBRATION DAMPER

    A005LZJ

    1. Check the No. 1 chain vibration damper.

      Minimum thickness
      1.0 mm (0.039 in.)

If the thickness is less than the minimum, replace the No. 1 chain vibration damper.

  7. INSPECT NO. 2 CHAIN VIBRATION DAMPER

    A005KPY

    1. Check the No. 2 chain vibration damper.

      Minimum thickness
      1.0 mm (0.039 in.)

If the thickness is less than the minimum, replace the No. 2 chain vibration damper.

  8. INSPECT CYLINDER HEAD SET BOLT

    A005LPDE06
    Text in Illustration
    *a Underhead Length

    1. Using a vernier caliper, measure the length of cylinder head set bolts from the seat to the end.

      Standard length
      143.5 mm (5.6496 in.)
      Maximum length
      145 mm (5.7087 in.)

If the length is greater than the maximum, replace the cylinder head set bolt.
