Ignition switch is ON

Power voltages (5 V as standard) supplied from ECM to accelerator pedal position sensor and diesel throttle position sensor are lower or higher than appropriate thresholds.

(1 trip detection logic)

  • Diesel throttle body assembly (throttle position sensor)

  • Open or short in diesel throttle position sensor circuit

  • Accelerator pedal assembly (accelerator pedal position sensor assembly)

  • Open or short in accelerator pedal position sensor circuit

  • ECM

Note

When replacing the ECM, the ECM needs Registration and Initialization Click here.

Tech Tips


  • When the ECM must be replaced, before replacing the ECM, perform the "Learning Values Save" function using the intelligent tester. Then after installing the new ECM, perform all of the initialization/registrations for the "Learning Values Write" function by following the instructions shown on the tester display.

  • Read freeze frame data using the intelligent tester. Freeze frame data records the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.

PROCEDURE


  1. CHECK ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P0697)


    1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the tester on.

    3. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / DTC.

    4. Read DTCs.

      DTC P0697 and other DTCs B

      If any DTCs other than P0697 are output, troubleshoot those DTCs first.

  2. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (DIESEL THROTTLE BODY ASSEMBLY - ECM)


    1. Disconnect the diesel throttle body assembly connector.

    2. Disconnect the ECM connector.

    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance (Check for Open)
      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      B81-5 (VC) - A59-46 (VCTA) Always Below 1 Ω
      B81-6 (VTA) - A59-45 (VTA1) Always Below 1 Ω
      B81-3 (E2) - A59-47 (ETA) Always Below 1 Ω
      Standard Resistance (Check for Short)
      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      B81-5 (VC) or A59-46 (VCTA) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
      B81-6 (VTA) or A59-45 (VTA1) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
      B81-3 (E2) or A59-47 (ETA) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

    4. Reconnect the diesel throttle body assembly connector.

    5. Reconnect the ECM connector.

  3. INSPECT ECM (VC VOLTAGE)

      Disconnect the diesel throttle body assembly connector.

    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.

    3. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Voltage

      B81-5 (VC) - B81-3 (E2) Ignition switch ON 4.5 to 5.5 V

    4. Reconnect the diesel throttle body assembly connector.

  4. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (ACCELERATOR PEDAL POSITION SENSOR -ECM)


    1. Disconnect the accelerator pedal position sensor connector.

    2. Disconnect the ECM connector.

    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance (Check for Open)

      A36-4 (VCPA) - A59-56 (VCPA) Always Below 1 Ω
      A36-6 (VPA) - A59-55 (VPA) Always Below 1 Ω
      A36-5 (EPA) - A59-57 (EPA) Always Below 1 Ω
      A36-1 (VCP2) - A59-53 (VCP2) Always Below 1 Ω
      A36-3 (VPA2) - A59-52 (VPA2) Always Below 1 Ω
      A36-2 (EPA2) - A59-54 (EPA2) Always Below 1 Ω

    4. Reconnect the accelerator pedal position sensor connector.

    5. Reconnect the ECM connector.

    4. Reconnect the accelerator pedal position sensor connector.

  7. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS (DTC P0697)


    1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the tester on.

    3. Clear the DTCs Click here.

    4. Turn the ignition switch off and wait for 30 seconds or more.

    5. Turn the ignition switch to ON.

    6. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / DTC.

    7. Read the DTC.

    6. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / DTC.

    7. Confirm that the DTC is not output again.
