PRECAUTION
Note
After turning the engine switch off, waiting time may be required before disconnecting the cable from the battery terminal. Therefore, make sure to read the disconnecting the cable from the battery terminal notice before proceeding with work Click here.
DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL
Note
When disconnecting the cable, some systems need to be initialized after the cable is reconnected Click here.
REMOVE NO. 1 ENGINE UNDER COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY
REMOVE REAR ENGINE UNDER COVER ASSEMBLY
DRAIN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID
DRAIN TRANSFER OIL
DRAIN ENGINE COOLANT
REMOVE PROPELLER SHAFT ASSEMBLY
REMOVE FRONT PROPELLER SHAFT ASSEMBLY
REMOVE STARTER ASSEMBLY
REMOVE MANIFOLD STAY
REMOVE NO. 2 MANIFOLD STAY
DISCONNECT TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE ASSEMBLY
Remove the nut and clip and disconnect the transmission control cable assembly from the automatic transmission assembly.
DISCONNECT WATER BY-PASS PIPE ASSEMBLY
Disconnect the 2 water by-pass hoses from the transmission oil cooler assembly, and remove the 2 bolts and disconnect the water by-pass pipe assembly from the automatic transmission assembly.
Note
Use a container to catch any coolant which flows out of the 2 water by-pass hoses.
REMOVE TRANSMISSION OIL COOLER ASSEMBLY
Disconnect the 2 oil cooler hoses from the transmission oil cooler assembly.
Disconnect the 2 oil cooler hoses from each 2 oil cooler tube unions.
Remove the 3 bolts and transmission oil cooler assembly from the automatic transmission assembly.
DISCONNECT OIL COOLER TUBE ASSEMBLY
Remove the 2 bolts and disconnect the oil cooler tube sub-assembly.
REMOVE TRANSFER CASE LOWER PROTECTOR
Remove the 4 bolts and transfer case lower protector.
REMOVE DRIVE PLATE AND TORQUE CONVERTER SETTING BOLT
Turn the crankshaft to gain access to the 6 drive plate and torque converter setting bolts and remove each bolt while holding the crankshaft pulley setting bolt with a wrench.
SUPPORT AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY
Support the automatic transmission assembly with a transmission jack. Lift the transmission slightly from the No. 3 frame crossmember sub-assembly.
Note
In order to protect the oil pan, place attachments onto the transmission jack.
Make sure that the attachments and the oil pan are centered on the transmission jack.
REMOVE FRONT SUSPENSION MEMBER BRACKET LH AND RH
Remove the 8 bolts, front suspension member bracket LH and RH.
REMOVE NO. 3 FRAME CROSSMEMBER SUB-ASSEMBLY
Remove the 4 bolts of the rear engine mounting insulator.
Remove the 4 nuts, 4 bolts and No. 3 frame crossmember sub-assembly.
REMOVE REAR NO.1 ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR
Remove the bolt and rear No. 1 engine mounting heat insulator.
Remove the 4 bolts and rear No. 1 engine mounting insulator from the automatic transmission assembly.
DISCONNECT WIRE HARNESS AND CONNECTOR
Tilt the automatic transmission assembly downward.
Note
Make sure that the cooling fan and fan shroud do not contact the engine when tilting the automatic transmission assembly.
Disconnect the park/neutral position switch connector, transmission wire connector, 2 speed sensor connectors and transfer control side connector.
Tech Tips
Detach the claw, press down the lever, and then disconnect the transmission wire connector.
Detach the 2 connector clamps and 7 harness clamps, and disconnect the wire harness.
DISCONNECT BREATHER PLUG HOSE
Disconnect the 3 breather plug hoses from the engine.
REMOVE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY
Remove the 9 bolts and automatic transmission assembly.
Note
Secure the automatic transmission assembly to the transmission jack using a belt, etc. to prevent it from falling.
Do not use excess force to pry on the automatic transmission assembly.
REMOVE TRANSFER ASSEMBLY
REMOVE TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE BRACKET
Remove the 2 bolts and transmission control cable bracket.
REMOVE TORQUE CONVERTER ASSEMBLY
INSPECT TORQUE CONVERTER ASSEMBLY
