CAUTION / NOTICE / HINT
Note
This transmission requires Toyota Genuine ATF WS.
After servicing the transmission, you must follow the ATF adjustment procedure.
Maintain the vehicle in a horizontal position while adjusting the fluid level.
PROCEDURE
PRELIMINARY PROCEDURES
Push the shaft of the thermostat and fix it in place.
Using compressed air, etc., blow dust off the thermostat cap to clean it.
| *1 | Cap |
| *2 | Screwdriver |
| *3 | Step |
| *4 | Shaft |
Using a screwdriver, push in the shaft of the thermostat.
Tech Tips
Distance pushed: 5.5 to 7.0 mm (0.217 to 0.275 in.)
Push the shaft until the screwdriver contacts the step inside the cap.
With the shaft of the thermostat pressed, push a pin into a hole in the side of the thermostat cap. Insert the pin until it passes through the hole in the other side of the thermostat cap to fix the shaft in place.
Tech Tips
Pin diameter: 1.0 to 1.8 mm (0.0394 to 0.0708 in.)
BEFORE FILLING TRANSMISSION
When you have replaced the entire transmission, transmission pan, drain plug, valve body and/or torque converter, proceed to the "Fill Transmission" procedures.
When you have replaced the transmission hose and/or output shaft oil seal, proceed to the "Fluid Temperature Check" procedures.
FILL TRANSMISSION
| *1 | Refill Plug |
| *2 | Overflow Plug |
| *3 | Refill Plug |
| *4 | Refill Hole |
Remove the refill plug and overflow plug.
| *1 | Overflow Tube |
| *a | Specified fluid level |
Fill the transmission through the refill hole until fluid begins to trickle out of the overflow tube.
Wait until the fluid flow slows and only drops come out.
Temporarily install the overflow plug and gasket.
Tech Tips
Reuse the old gasket. The overflow plug will be removed again to adjust the fluid level.
Fill the transmission with the amount of fluid listed in the table below.
| Reference Capacity | ||||||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
|
Tech Tips
If you cannot fill the listed amount of fluid, perform the following:
Temporarily install the refill plug with O-ring.
Tech Tips
Reuse the old O-ring. The refill plug will be removed again to adjust the fluid level.
Start the engine and idle it.
Note
Check that electrical systems such as the air conditioning system, audio system and lighting system are off.
Move the shift lever through entire gear range to circulate fluid.
Wait for 30 seconds with the engine idling.
Stop the engine.
Remove the refill plug with O-ring.
Fill the transmission with the remaining fluid until the amount in the table has been filled.
FLUID TEMPERATURE CHECK
Note
The ATF temperature can be confirmed by using the GTS.
Turn the engine switch off.
Connect the GTS to the DLC3.
Turn the engine switch to ON.
Enter the following menus: Powertrain / ECT / Data List / A/T Oil Temperature 1.
| Tester Display |
|---|
| A/T Oil Temperature 1 |
Check the ATF temperature.
Note
If the ATF temperature is higher than 45°C (113°F), turn the engine switch off and wait until the fluid temperature drops to below 40°C (104°F).
FLUID LEVEL CHECK
Note
It is necessary to change to temperature detection mode in order to idle the vehicle appropriately.
The ATF temperature must be between 40 and 45°C (104 and 113°F) to accurately check the fluid level.
When using the GTS:
Enter the following menus: Powertrain / ECT / Active Test / Connect the TC and TE1.
| Tester Display |
|---|
| Connect the TC and TE1 |
| *a | Front view of DLC3 |
When not using the GTS:
Using SST, connect terminals 13 (TC) and 4 (CG) of the DLC3.
| Standard condition |
|---|
| Indicator lights in the combination meter blink. |
Start the engine and idle it.
Note
Check that electrical systems such as the air conditioning system, audio system and lighting system are off.
Slowly move the shift lever from P to S, and then change the gear from 1st to 5th. Then return the shift lever to P.
Tech Tips
Slowly move the shift lever to circulate the fluid through each part of the transmission.
Move the shift lever to D, and quickly move it back and forth between N and D (once within 1.5 seconds) for at least 6 seconds. This will activate the fluid temperature detection mode.
| Standard condition |
|---|
| Indicator light [D] remains illuminated for 2 seconds and then turns off. |
When using the GTS:
Return the shift lever to P and terminate the Active Test on the GTS.
When not using the GTS:
Return the shift lever to P and disconnect SST from the DLC3.
Allow the engine to idle until the fluid temperature reaches 40 to 45°C (104 to 113°F).
Tech Tips
The indicator [D] will come on again when the fluid temperature reaches 40°C (104°F) and will blink if it is higher than 45°C (113°F).
Adjust the transmission fluid level when the "D" shift position indicator is illuminated.
If the "D" shift position indicator is not illuminated, idle the engine to warm it up until the "D" shift position indicator illuminates.
If the "D" shift position indicator is illuminated, immediately begin to adjust the fluid level.
If the "D" shift position indicator is blinking, stop the engine to cool the fluid. Once the fluid temperature drops to the appropriate level, perform the fluid level adjustment procedure again.
| Below 40°C (104°F) | 40 to 45°C (104 to 113°F) | Higher than 45°C (113°F) |
| Turn off | Turn on | Blinking |
| *1 | Overflow Tube |
| *a | Specified fluid level |
Remove the overflow plug and gasket with the engine idling.
Wait until the overflow slows to a trickle.
Note
If the fluid does not overflow, perform the following:
Remove the refill plug and gasket.
Refill the transmission through the refill hole until fluid begins to trickle out of the overflow tube.
Wait until the overflow slows to a trickle.
Install a new gasket and the overflow plug.
Install a new gasket and the refill plug.
COMPLETE
Turn the engine switch off.
When using the GTS:
Disconnect the GTS from the DLC3.
| *1 | Cap |
| *2 | Shaft |
Push in the shaft with a screwdriver and remove the pin.
Note
Make sure the shaft of the thermostat is protruding from the hole in the cap.
Inspect for automatic transmission fluid leaks.
