FRONT AXLE HUB REMOVAL

Note

  • When the brake pedal is first depressed after replacing the brake pads or pushing back the disc brake piston, DTC C1214 may be output. As there is no malfunction, clear the DTC.

  • While the battery is connected, even if the power switch is off, the brake control system activates when the brake pedal is depressed or any door courtesy switch turns on. Therefore, when servicing brake system components, do not operate the brake pedal or open/close the doors while the battery is connected.

Tech Tips

  • Use the same procedure for the RH side and LH side.

  • The procedure listed below is for the LH side.

  1. REMOVE REAR FLOOR MAT

    1. A003TLX

      Remove the rear floor mat.

  2. REMOVE REAR DECK FLOOR BOX

    1. A003TAA

Remove the rear deck floor box.

  3. REMOVE BATTERY BOX COVER

    1. A003UZD

Disengage the 3 guides and remove the battery box cover.

  4. DISABLE BRAKE CONTROL

    1. Wait at least 2 minutes after the power switch off.

      Note

When the brake pedal is depressed or the door courtesy switch is turned on even if the power switch is off, the brake control system activates. Therefore do not depress the brake pedal or open/close the doors until the reservoir level switch connector is disconnected.

    2. A003S3N

Disconnect the reservoir level switch connector with the parking brake applied.

    3. Disconnect the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal.

      Note

When disconnecting the cable, some systems need to be initialized after the cable is reconnected Click here.

    4. Depress the brake pedal 40 times or more to return all the fluid in the accumulator back to the reservoir.

    5. Check that the brake pedal can not be further depressed.

    6. Release the parking brake.

  5. REMOVE FRONT WHEEL

  6. REMOVE FRONT AXLE SHAFT NUT

    A003UMOE01

    1. Using SST and a hammer, unstake the staked part of the front axle shaft nut.

      SST

      Note

Loosen the staked part of the front axle shaft nut completely, otherwise the threads on the drive shaft may be damaged.

    2. While applying the brakes, remove the front axle shaft nut.

  7. SEPARATE FRONT SPEED SENSOR

    1. A003RNI

Remove the bolt and clamp, and separate the front speed sensor.

      Note

Be sure to separate the front speed sensor from the front shock absorber with coil spring completely.

    2. A003UKM

Remove the bolt and separate the front speed sensor from the steering knuckle.

      Note

      • Prevent foreign matter from attaching to the sensor tip.

      • Be careful not to damage the front speed sensor.

      • Clean the installation hole and the surface for the speed sensor every time the speed sensor is removed.

  8. SEPARATE FRONT FLEXIBLE HOSE

    1. A003TRO

Remove the bolt and separate the front flexible hose.

  9. SEPARATE FRONT DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY

    1. Remove the 2 bolts and separate the front disc brake caliper assembly from the steering knuckle.

      Note

Use wire or an equivalent tool to keep the front disc brake caliper assembly from hanging down by the flexible hose.

  10. REMOVE FRONT DISC

  11. SEPARATE TIE ROD END SUB-ASSEMBLY

    1. Remove the cotter pin and nut.

    2. A003S3HE01

Install SST to the tie rod end.

      SST

      CAUTION:

Apply grease to the bolt threads and the tip of SST.

      Note

      • Be sure to tighten the string firmly to secure SST to the steering knuckle to prevent SST from falling off.

      • Install SST with the center nut so that A and B shown in the illustration are parallel. Otherwise, the dust cover may be damaged.

      • Be sure to place the wrench on the part indicated in the illustration.

      • Do not damage the front disc brake dust cover.

      • Do not damage the ball joint dust cover.

      • Do not damage the steering knuckle.

  12. SEPARATE FRONT NO. 1 LOWER SUSPENSION ARM SUB-ASSEMBLY

    1. A003S48

Remove the bolt and 2 nuts.

    2. Separate the front No. 1 lower suspension arm sub-assembly from the front lower ball joint.

  13. REMOVE FRONT AXLE ASSEMBLY

    1. A003TTR

Remove the 2 bolts and 2 nuts, and disconnect the front shock absorber assembly with coil spring from the steering knuckle.

      Tech Tips

When removing the nuts, keep the bolts from rotating.

      *a Matchmark

Put matchmarks on the front drive shaft assembly and front axle hub sub-assembly.

    3. Using a plastic hammer, separate the front drive shaft assembly from the front axle assembly. If it is difficult to separate, tap the end of the front drive shaft assembly using a brass bar and a hammer.

      Note

Be careful not to damage the front drive shaft boot.

  14. REMOVE FRONT AXLE HUB SUB-ASSEMBLY

    1. A003TI3

Secure the front axle assembly between aluminium plates in a vise.

      Note

When using a vise, do not overtighten it.

    2. Remove the 4 bolts and front axle hub sub-assembly from the steering knuckle.

      Note

Do not place the hub and bearing's magnet rotor side so that it is facing downward, and do not allow the magnet rotor side to become damaged or contact foreign matter.

    3. Remove the front brake dust cover from the steering knuckle.
