DESCRIPTION

When the EDU in the continuously variable valve lift controller assembly detects that the actuator does not operate even though the EDU commands the actuator to operate and power is supplied to the actuator, a DTC is stored and the MIL illuminates.

  • The actuator current is 10 A or more

  • The stroke variation is 0.01 mm (0.00039 in.) or less every 0.016 sec.


  • Continuously variable valve lift controller assembly

  • Camshaft housing

When all of the following conditions are met:

(1 trip detection logic)


  • The actuator duty cycle is 80% or less

  • The actuator current is 10 A or more

  • The stroke variation is 0.01 mm (0.00039 in.) or less every 0.016 sec.


  • Continuously variable valve lift controller assembly

  • Camshaft housing

Perform the following procedures to confirm that the VALVEMATIC system is operating normally.


  1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

  2. Start the engine.

  3. Turn the tester on.

  4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Activate the VALVEMATIC (ENG ON).

    Note

    Make sure the following conditions are met when performing the Active Test.


    • The engine is running.

    • The engine coolant temperature is 40°C (104°F) or higher.

    • The vehicle is stationary.

    • The shift lever is in P or N (for CVT), or neutral (for M/T).

    Result
    The "VALVEMATIC Current Angle" follows the "VALVEMATIC Target Angle".

Tech Tips

If the malfunction does not reoccur, refer to the engine coolant temperature and intake air temperature recorded in the freeze frame data and perform a simulation test.

When the Active Test results are abnormal, remove the continuously variable valve lift controller assembly from the camshaft housing and perform the "Activate the VALVEMATIC (ENG OFF)" Active Test with the removed continuously variable valve lift controller to determine whether the problem is with the continuously variable valve lift controller assembly or camshaft housing.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

Note

When the one of the following DTCs is stored and the MIL is illuminated, DTC P1047 is stored and actuator position learning is performed every time the engine is started. Also, after the system returns to normal, the following occurs during the first driving cycle: 1) DTC P1047 is stored, 2) actuator position learning is performed and 3) the MIL illuminates during actuator position learning.

Actuator position learning is performed when these DTCs are output.

Tech Tips


  • When DTC P1047 is output at the same time as DTC P2646 and/or P2647, disregard P1047 and proceed with the inspection.

  • After performing repairs, perform the following procedures and check that DTCs are not output again.


  1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

  2. Start the engine and warm it up.

  3. Turn the tester on.

  4. Clear the DTCs Click here.

  5. Turn the ignition switch off and wait 10 seconds.

  6. Start the engine and idle it for 20 seconds.

  7. Clear the DTCs Click here.

  8. Turn the ignition switch off and wait 10 seconds.

  9. Start the engine and idle it for 20 seconds.

  10. Turn the ignition switch off and wait 10 seconds.

  11. Turn the ignition switch to ON.

  12. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / DTC.

  13. Read the DTCs.


  • Also, perform the "Activate the VALVEMATIC (ENG ON)" Active Test and confirm that the VALVEMATIC system is operating normally.

PROCEDURE


  1. CHECK ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT


    1. Connect an intelligent tester to the DLC3.

    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.

    3. Turn the tester on.

    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / DTC.

    5. Read the DTCs.

      Result

      Only DTC P2646 or P2647 is output A
      DTC P0112, P0113, P0115, P0117 or P0118 is output at the same time as DTC P2646 and/or P2647 B

      Tech Tips


      • If an engine coolant temperature sensor malfunction DTC or intake air temperature sensor malfunction DTC is output at the same time as DTC P2646 or P2647, check the corresponding temperature sensor first.

      • After repairing the temperature sensor, clear the DTCs, perform a simulation test and check that the temperature sensor DTC is not output.

      • When the temperature sensor DTC does not reoccur but DTC P2646 or P2647 is output again, perform troubleshooting from the next step. If a DTC is not output, troubleshooting is complete.

      • If DTC P264A is output at the same time, replace the continuously variable valve lift controller assembly as one or more of the position sensor and/or angle sensor in the continuously variable valve lift controller assembly are malfunctioning.

      • After replacing the continuously variable valve lift controller assembly, perform a simulation test and confirm that DTCs are not output.

  2. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS


    1. Perform a simulation test.


      1. Start the engine and idle it for 20 seconds [A].

      2. Turn the ignition switch off and wait 10 seconds [B].

      3. Repeat step [A] to [B] 3 times.

    2. Connect an intelligent tester to the DLC3.

    3. Turn the ignition switch to ON.

    4. Turn the tester on.

    5. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / DTC.

    6. Read the DTCs.

      Tech Tips

      If DTC P264A is output, replace the continuously variable valve lift controller assembly as the position sensor and/or angle sensor are malfunctioning.

  3. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING INTELLIGENT TESTER


    1. Remove the continuously variable valve lift controller assembly from the camshaft housing Click here.

    2. Connect an intelligent tester to the DLC3.

    3. Turn the ignition switch to ON.

    4. Turn the tester on.

    5. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Activate the VALVEMATIC (ENG OFF)

    6. When the continuously variable valve lift controller assembly is operated using intelligent tester, check whether the shaft moves Click here.

      Note


      • Make sure to perform the "Activate the VALVEMATIC (ENG OFF)" Active Test with the continuously variable valve lift controller assembly removed from the vehicle.

      • Perform the Active Test with the body of the continuously variable valve lift controller assembly connected to ground, as the continuously variable valve lift controller assembly is grounded through the body.
