AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY REMOVAL


  1. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL

    CAUTION:

    Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to prevent airbag activation.

  2. REMOVE SHIFT LEVER KNOB SUB-ASSEMBLY

    1. Twist the shift lever knob in the direction indicated by the arrow and remove it.

  3. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE HOLE COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY


    1. Attach the 4 claws to install the parking brake hole cover.

  4. REMOVE UPPER CONSOLE PANEL SUB-ASSEMBLY


    1. Detach the 12 claws and remove the upper console panel.

      Note

      Be careful not to damage the instrument panel and console box with the claws of the upper console panel.

  5. REMOVE CONSOLE BOX ASSEMBLY

    1. Remove the 4 screws and 2 bolts.

    2. Using a clip remover, remove the 2 clips and console box.

  6. REMOVE SHIFT LEVER BOOT ASSEMBLY

      Remove the 4 screws and shift lever boot.

  7. REMOVE TRANSFER HIGH AND LOW SHIFT LEVER ASSEMBLY

      Fold back the transfer front drive shift boot.

    2. Using needle-nose pliers, remove the snap ring and pull out the shift lever.

      Tech Tips

      Move the transfer shift lever to the H4 position.

  8. REMOVE NO. 1 ENGINE UNDER COVER

  9. REMOVE NO. 2 ENGINE UNDER COVER

  10. REMOVE NO. 3 ENGINE UNDER COVER

  11. REMOVE FRONT EXHAUST PIPE ASSEMBLY


    1. Remove the 2 bolts and 2 compression springs.

    2. Disconnect the front exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold and remove the gasket.

    3. Remove the front exhaust pipe from the exhaust pipe support.

  12. REMOVE TRANSFER CASE LOWER PROTECTOR


    1. Remove the 4 bolts and transfer case lower protector.

  13. REMOVE FRONT PROPELLER SHAFT ASSEMBLY


    1. Remove the front propeller shaft assembly Click here.

  14. REMOVE REAR PROPELLER SHAFT ASSEMBLY


    1. Remove the rear propeller shaft assembly Click here.

  15. DRAIN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID


    1. Remove the drain plug and gasket, and drain ATF.

    2. Install a new gasket and the drain plug.

      Torque:
      20 N*m  { 205 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf }

  16. DRAIN TRANSFER OIL

  17. REMOVE TRANSMISSION OIL FILLER TUBE SUB-ASSEMBLY

    1. Remove the oil dipstick.

    2. Remove the 2 bolts and oil filler tube.

    3. Remove the O-ring from the oil filler tube.

  18. DISCONNECT OIL COOLER TUBE

    1. Using a union nut wrench, disconnect the tube outlet and tube inlet.

      Remove the 3 bolts and 3 clamps.

  19. DISCONNECT TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE ASSEMBLY

    1. Remove the nut and disconnect the control cable.

    2. Remove the clip and disconnect the control cable.

  20. REMOVE STARTER ASSEMBLY


    1. Remove the starter assembly Click here.

  21. SUPPORT AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY

    1. Support the transmission with a transmission jack.

  22. REMOVE NO. 3 FRAME CROSSMEMBER SUB-ASSEMBLY

    1. *1: Remove the 4 set bolts of the No. 1 engine mounting insulator rear.

    2. *2: Remove the 4 nuts, 4 bolts and frame crossmember.

  23. REMOVE NO. 1 ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR REAR

    1. Remove the 4 bolts and engine mounting insulator.

  24. DISCONNECT CONNECTOR


    1. A01J62B

      Remove the nut and disconnect the ground cable.

    2. A01J7KT

      Remove the 2 bolts and heat insulator.

    3. A01J7GDE01

      Tilt the transmission downward.

      Note

      Make sure the cooling fan does not contact the fan shroud.

    4. Transmission side:

      Disconnect the connectors.


      1. Disconnect the temperature sensor connector.

      2. Disconnect the park/neutral position switch connector.

      3. Disconnect the 2 speed sensor connectors.

      4. Disconnect the transmission wire connector.

    5. Transfer side:

      Disconnect the connectors.


      1. Disconnect the indicator switch connector (for 4WD).

      2. Disconnect the speedometer sensor connector.

      3. Disconnect the indicator switch connector (for L4).

      4. Disconnect the indicator switch connector (neutral).

  25. DISCONNECT WIRE HARNESS

  26. REMOVE FLYWHEEL HOUSING DUST SEAL

  27. REMOVE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY

    1. Turn the crankshaft to gain access to each bolt.

    2. Hold the crankshaft pulley bolt with a wrench and remove the 6 torque converter clutch mounting bolts.

      Remove the 3 bolts and exhaust manifold stay.

    4. A01J5BE

      Remove the 7 bolts.

    5. Separate the transmission from the engine.

  28. REMOVE TRANSFER ASSEMBLY


    1. Remove the 8 bolts and 2 clamps.

    2. Remove the transfer from the transmission.

  29. REMOVE TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ASSEMBLY

  30. REMOVE TRANSMISSION CONTROL CABLE BRACKET

    1. Remove the 2 bolts and control cable bracket from the transmission.
