Note
This transaxle requires Toyota Genuine CVT fluid FE.
Make sure that the vehicle is level when inspecting the fluid level.
(The front-to-rear inclination angle must be within +/- 1° from horizontal.)
Allow the fluid to cool to room temperature before performing any of these procedures.
ADD CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE TRANSAXLE FLUID
Tech Tips
Refer to the following diagram when adding fluid.
When adding fluid (large fill volume) *1
Be sure that the vehicle remains level and lift the vehicle.
Using a 6 mm hexagon socket wrench, remove the overflow plug and the gasket.
Using a 6 mm hexagon socket wrench, check that the No. 1 transmission oil filler tube is tightened to the specified torque.
Note
If the No. 1 transmission oil filler tube is not tightened to the specified torque, then the fluid level cannot be adjusted correctly.
Remove the refill plug and the gasket.
Add fluid into the refill hole until it flows out from the overflow hole.
Note
Use Toyota Genuine CVT fluid FE.
Wait until the steady flow slows to a trickle, install the gasket, and temporarily tighten the overflow plug with a 6 mm hexagon socket wrench.
Tech Tips
Because the overflow plug will be removed again, the gasket can be reused at this time.
Fill the specified volume of fluid into the refill hole.
Note
The fill amount varies depending on the procedures being completed.

FLUID TEMPERATURE CHECK
Note
The fluid temperature can be confirmed by checking the indicator light in the meter or by using the intelligent tester. When using the intelligent tester, it is necessary to change to temperature detection mode in order to idle the vehicle appropriately.
When using the intelligent tester:
Turn the ignition switch off.
Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.
Turn the ignition switch to ON.
Turn the intelligent tester on.
Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / A/T Oil Temperature 1.
Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Connect the TC and TE1.
When not using the intelligent tester:
| *1 | DLC3 |
Using SST, connect terminals 13 (TC) and 4 (CG) of the DLC3.
Start the engine.
Note
Check that electrical systems such as the air conditioning system, audio system and lighting system are off.
Tech Tips
Indicator lights of the meter blink to output DTCs when terminals 13 (TC) and 4 (CG) are connected.
Slowly move the shift lever from P to B and back to P again.
Tech Tips
Hold the shift lever in each position for approximately 3 seconds.
Move the shift lever to D, and then continuously move the shift lever back and forth between N and D at an interval of less than 1.5 seconds for 6 seconds or more.
| Standard condition |
|---|
| The indicator light (D) remains illuminated for 2 seconds and then turns off. |
Tech Tips
Performing this operation will cause the vehicle to enter fluid temperature detection mode.
Return the shift lever to P.
When using the intelligent tester:
According to the display on the intelligent tester, perform the Active Test "Connect the TC and TE1 / OFF".
When not using the intelligent tester:
Remove SST from terminals 13 (TC) and 4 (CG).
The indicator light (D) remains off, illuminates, or blinks depending on the fluid temperature.
| Indicator Light (D) | |||||||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
|
If the indicator remains off or illuminates, perform the "Fluid Level Check".
Tech Tips
If the light is blinking, stop the engine, wait for the fluid temperature to decrease, and repeat the procedure from "Fluid Temperature Check".
FLUID LEVEL CHECK
Idle the engine to warm it up, and ensure that the fluid temperature is correct.
Lift the vehicle immediately after the indicator light (D) illuminates.
Note
Adjust the fluid level while the indicator light (D) is illuminated.
Using a 6 mm hexagon socket wrench, remove the overflow plug and the gasket, and then check the fluid condition.
Tech Tips
Check that the fluid flows out from the overflow tube.
If the volume of fluid that flows out is small, it is possible that fluid was remaining in the No. 1 transmission oil filler tube (approximately 5 cc (0.3 cu in.)), so assume that there was no overflow.
If the fluid overflows:
Wait until the steady flow slows to a trickle, and then use a 6 mm hexagon socket wrench to install a new gasket and tighten the overflow plug.
Replace the refill plug with a new gasket and tighten the refill plug.
If the fluid does not overflow:
Remove the refill plug and the gasket.
Add fluid into the refill hole until it flows out from the overflow hole.
Note
Use Toyota Genuine CVT fluid FE.
Wait until the steady flow slows to a trickle, and then install a new gasket and tighten the overflow plug.
Install a new gasket and fully tighten the refill plug.
Lower the vehicle.
When using the intelligent tester:
Turn the ignition switch off and disconnect the intelligent tester.
When not using the intelligent tester:
Turn the ignition switch off.
INSPECT FOR CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE TRANSAXLE FLUID LEAK
Clean the area and check for fluid leaks.
