MAINTENANCE PRECAUTIONS
Do not stop the engine immediately after pulling a trailer, or after high speed or uphill driving. Let the engine idle for 20 to 120 seconds before turning the ignition switch off. (The appropriate idling time varies according to the driving condition.)
Avoid quick acceleration and increases in engine speed immediately after starting a cold engine.
If the turbocharger is found to be defective, it must be replaced. Also, investigate the cause of the trouble including the conditions in which the turbocharger has been used. Repair or replace the following if necessary:
Engine oil level and quality
Oil lines leading to turbocharger
Pay due attention when removing and reinstalling the turbocharger assembly. Do not drop, grasp, or apply shock to easily-deformed assembly parts, such as the actuator or push rod, when removing or reinstalling the assembly.
Cover both the intake and exhaust ports and the oil inlet before removing them, to prevent dirt or foreign objects from being introduced.
When replacing the turbocharger, check for an accumulation of sludge particles in the oil pipe.
Thoroughly remove any old gasket sticking to the lubrication oil pipe flange and turbocharger oil flange.
When replacing the bolt(s) and nut(s), Toyota genuine parts must be used to prevent breakage or deformation.
When replacing the turbocharger, put 20 cm3(1.2 cu in.) of fresh oil into the turbocharger oil inlet hole, and then turn the turbine wheel by hand to spread the oil to the bearing.
When overhauling or replacing the engine, cut the fuel supply after reassembling, and crank the engine for 30 seconds to feed oil throughout the engine. Idle the engine for 60 seconds.
Since the turbine wheels run at an extremely high speed, running the engine without the air cleaner, case cover and hose damages the compressor wheel due to introduction of foreign particles.
When a new turbocharger is installed, DTC P0046 is likely to occur. Perform the following procedure to clear the DTC.
Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.
Clear DTCs Click here.
Turn the ignition switch off within 10 seconds of clearing DTCs, and wait for 30 seconds.
Tech Tips
The ignition switch must be turned off before DTC recurs.
Turn the ignition switch to ON and wait for 10 seconds or more.
Start the engine and fully depress and release the accelerator pedal.
Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / DTC.
Confirm that the DTC is not output again.
