  2. REMOVE CYLINDER HEAD SUB-ASSEMBLY

    1. A01197AE01

Using several steps, uniformly loosen and remove the 10 cylinder head bolts and 10 plate washers with a 10 mm bi-hexagon wrench in the sequence shown in the illustration.

      Note

Head warpage or cracking could result from removing the bolts in the wrong order.

    2. Using a screwdriver with its tip wrapped with protective tape, pry between the cylinder head and cylinder block, and remove the cylinder head.

      Note

Be careful not to damage the contact surfaces of the cylinder head and cylinder block.

      *a Cylinder Block Side
      *b Intake Manifold Side
      *c Exhaust Manifold Side

Using a precision straightedge and a feeler gauge, measure the surfaces that contact the cylinder block and the manifolds for warpage.

      Maximum Warpage
      Item Specified Condition
Cylinder block side 0.05 mm (0.0020 in.)
Intake manifold side 0.10 mm (0.0039 in.)
Exhaust manifold side 0.10 mm (0.0039 in.)

If the warpage is greater than the maximum, replace the cylinder head.

  5. INSPECT CYLINDER HEAD FOR CRACKS

    1. A0119S4

Using a dye penetrant, check the intake ports, exhaust ports and cylinder head surface for cracks.

If cracked, replace the cylinder head.

  6. INSPECT CYLINDER HEAD SET BOLT

      *a Measurement Length

Using a vernier caliper, measure the length of the cylinder head set bolt from the seat to the end.

      Standard bolt length
      125.3 to 126.7 mm (4.9331 to 4.9882 in.)
      Maximum bolt length
      128.2 mm (5.047 in.)

If the bolt length is greater than the maximum, replace the cylinder head set bolt.
