LIGHTING SYSTEM SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

  1. EXTERIOR LIGHT CONTROL SYSTEM (w/ Daytime Running Light System or w/ Automatic Light Control System)

    Tech Tips

    • If the vehicle with daytime running light system or with automatic light control system, the exterior lights (headlights, taillights, front fog lights and rear fog light) are controlled by the main body ECU.

    • If the vehicle without daytime running light system and without automatic light control system, the exterior lights (headlights, taillights, front fog lights, and rear fog light) are not controlled by the main body ECU.

The exterior light control system has the following functions:

    • Automatic light control

    • Manual light control

    • High beam control

    • Passing light control

    • Front fog light control

    • Rear fog light control

    • Light auto turn off control

    • Daytime running light control

    1. Automatic Light Control

      A011APBE10

      1. General

When the light control switch is in the AUTO position, the automatic light control sensor detects ambient light levels and outputs it to the main body ECU. The main body ECU controls the low beam headlights and taillights (clearance lights, taillights and license plate lights) according to the signal. By this function, when driving at night, when going into tunnel etc, the taillights and low beam headlights come on automatically. If the timing of lights ON/OFF does not meet to user feeling, the sensitivity of automatic light control system can be changed using the intelligent tester.

      2. Fail-Safe

If the main body ECU detects a malfunction in the automatic light control sensor, the main body ECU effects fail-safe control to prohibit the automatic light control.

        • If a problem occurs in the automatic light control when the light control switch is in the AUTO position and the headlights or taillights are on, the body ECU will keep the lights on until the light control switch is turned off or the conditions for activating the headlight auto turn off control are met.

        • If a problem occurs in the automatic light control when the light control switch is in the AUTO position, and both headlights and taillights are off, the body ECU will interrupt the automatic light control system operation and keep both headlights and taillights off until the frequency output from the automatic light control sensor is determined to be normal.

    2. Manual Light Control

      • Manual light control functions to illuminate the low beam headlights and taillights (clearance lights, taillights and license plate lights) by manual operation of the light control switch.

      • When the light control switch is turned to the TAIL position, the main body ECU turns the taillights on. When the light control switch is turned to the HEAD position, the main body ECU turns the low beam headlights and taillights on.

    3. Daytime Running Light Control

      A0119YYE02

      • This function is designed to automatically illuminate the low beam headlights and taillights (clearance lights, taillights and license plate lights), during the daytime to make the car more risible to other vehicles.

      • The main body ECU controls this function.

      • This control is enabled when the conditions given below are met:

        • Ignition switch is ON

        • Engine is running

        • Light control switch OFF or AUTO position (if headlight-on and taillight-on control is not performed by the automatic light control)

      Tech Tips

      • When the taillights and low beam headlights are turned on by the automatic light control or manual light control, the instrument panel illumination is also turned on.

      • When the taillights and low beam headlights are turned on by the daytime running control, the instrument panel illumination ON is prohibited.

    4. High Beam Control

      • High beam control functions to illuminate farther ahead than normal.

      • When both of the following conditions are met, the high beam headlights come on:

        • Low beam headlights are turned on by the automatic light control or manual light control.

        • Dimmer switch is in HIGH position.

    5. Passing Light Control

      • Passing light control functions to illuminate the high beam headlights in order to allow an oncoming vehicle to become aware of the vehicle's presence while driving with poor visibility.

      • When the dimmer switch is turned to the HIGH FLASH position, the high beam headlights come on.

    6. Front Fog Light Control

      • The front fog light control functions to maintain visibility in the road ahead of the vehicle while driving with poor visibility, such as when driving in a dense fog.

      • When both of the following conditions are met, the front fog lights come on:

        • Taillights are turned on by the automatic light control or manual light control.

        • Front fog light switch is on.

      • When either of the following conditions is met, the front fog lights turn off:

        • Front fog light switch is off.

        • Taillights are off.

    7. Rear Fog Light Control

      • The rear fog light control functions to allow vehicles that are following to become aware of the vehicle's presence while driving with poor visibility, such as when driving in a dense fog.

      • When all of the following conditions are met, the rear fog lights come on:

        • Low beam headlights are turned on by the automatic light control or manual light control.

        • Front fog lights are on*1.

        • Rear fog light switch is on.

      • When any of the following conditions is met, the rear fog lights turn off:

        • Taillights are off.

        • Front fog light switch is off*1.

        • Rear fog light switch is off.

    8. Light Auto Turn off Control

      A0118RNE09

      • The light auto turn-off control is used to prevent the driver from leaving the vehicle with the headlights, fog lights, clearance lights, taillights, or license plate lights on.

      • The lights that will turn off will vary as shown in the table below, according to the position of the light control switch.

        Switch Position Outline
        TAIL HEAD AUTO
        - - While the lights (headlights, front fog lights, rear fog lights, and taillights) are turned ON, this control automatically turns them off when the ignition switch is turned from ON to off, and the driver side door is opened.
        - While the lights (headlights, front fog lights, rear fog lights, and taillights) are turned ON, this control automatically turns off only the headlights and the front fog lights when the ignition switch is turned from ON to off.
  2. MANUAL HEADLIGHT BEAM LEVEL CONTROL SYSTEM

    1. When the vehicle posture changes in accordance with the number (weight) of passengers and volume of luggage, this system enables the adjustment of the LO beam level (11-step) of the headlights manually to the appropriate level based on the position of the headlight leveling switch.

      • The beam level of the headlight can be adjusted by the headlight leveling motor that is installed in the headlight assembly.

      • A headlight leveling switch is provided to allow the driver to control this system.
