CAUTION:

  • Prolonged and repeated contact with engine oil will cause removal of natural oils from the skin, leading to dryness, irritation and dermatitis. In addition, used engine oil contains potentially harmful contaminants which may cause skin cancer.

  • Precautions should be taken when replacing engine oil to minimize the risk of your skin making contact with used engine oil. Wear protective clothing and gloves. Wash your skin thoroughly with soap and water, or use a waterless hand cleaner to remove any used engine oil. Do not use gasoline, thinners or solvents.

  • For environmental protection, used oil and used oil filters must be disposed of at designated disposal sites.

  1. REMOVE FRONT LOWER BUMPER ABSORBER (for Rough Road Area Specification Vehicles)

  2. REMOVE NO. 1 ENGINE UNDER COVER (for Rough Road Area Specification Vehicles)

  3. DRAIN ENGINE OIL

    1. Remove the oil filler cap.

    2. Remove the oil pan drain plug and drain the oil into a container.

    3. Clean and install the oil pan drain plug with a new gasket.

      Torque:
      40 N*m  { 408 kgf*cm, 30 ft.*lbf }

  4. REMOVE OIL FILTER SUB-ASSEMBLY

      except Rough Road Area Specification Vehicles:

      Detach the 2 clips and open the engine under cover as shown in the illustration.

      Using SST, remove the oil filter.

  5. INSTALL OIL FILTER SUB-ASSEMBLY

    1. Check and clean the oil filter installation surface.

    2. Apply clean engine oil to the gasket of a new oil filter.

    3. Lightly screw the oil filter into place by hand. Tighten it until the gasket contacts the seat.

      Using SST, tighten the oil filter.

      1. Depending on the work space available, choose from the following.

        If enough space is available, use a torque wrench to tighten the oil filter.

        Torque:
        18 N*m  { 184 kgf*cm, 13 ft.*lbf }

        If enough space is not available to use a torque wrench, tighten the oil filter a 3/4 turn by hand or use a common wrench.

      except Rough Road Area Specification Vehicles:

      Attach the 2 clips to close the engine under cover.

  6. ADD ENGINE OIL

    1. Add fresh engine oil and install the oil filler cap.

      Standard Oil Grade
      Oil Grade Oil Viscosity (SAE)
      API grade SL or SM multigrade engine oil

      • 20W-50

      • 15W-40
      API grade SL "Energy-Conserving", SM "Energy-Conserving" or ILSAC multigrade engine oil

      • 5W-30

      • 10W-30

      (5W-30 is the best choice for fuel economy and good starting in cold weather.)

  7. INSPECT FOR OIL LEAK

    1. Start the engine. Make sure that there are no oil leaks from the area that was worked on.

  8. INSTALL NO. 1 ENGINE UNDER COVER (for Rough Road Area Specification Vehicles)

  9. INSTALL FRONT LOWER BUMPER ABSORBER (for Rough Road Area Specification Vehicles)
