DESCRIPTION

Tech Tips

"Manual cut off switch" refers to the airbag cut-off switch.

When all the conditions below are met:


  • The center airbag sensor receives a line short circuit signal, an open circuit signal, a short circuit to ground signal or a short circuit to B+ signal in the airbag cut-off switch circuit for 2 seconds.

  • A airbag cut-off switch malfunction

  • A center airbag sensor malfunction


  • Instrument panel wire

  • No. 2 instrument panel wire

  • Airbag cut-off switch

  • Center airbag sensor assembly

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

Note


  • After turning the engine switch off, waiting time may be required before disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal. Therefore, make sure to read the disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal notices before proceeding with work Click here.

  • When disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal while performing repairs, some systems need to be initialized after the cable is reconnected Click here.

Tech Tips

The E47-11 (MSW+) and E47-12 (MSW-) terminals in this circuit have an activation prevention mechanism. This mechanism can be used to check for an open circuit in the wire harness. In case of other checks (check for short, short to ground or short to B+), this mechanism should be released.

PROCEDURE


  1. CHECK INSTRUMENT PANEL WIRE (CENTER AIRBAG SENSOR - AIRBAG CUT-OFF SWITCH)

    1. Turn the engine switch off.

    2. Disconnect the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal, and wait for at least 90 seconds.

    3. Disconnect the connectors from the center airbag sensor and airbag cut-off switch.

    4. Connect the cable to the negative (-) battery terminal, and wait for at least 2 seconds.

    5. Turn the engine switch on (IG).

    6. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Voltage
      Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
      F33-2 (PMC+) - Body ground Engine switch on (IG) Below 1 V
      F33-1 (PMC-) - Body ground Engine switch on (IG) Below 1 V
    7. Turn the engine switch off.

    8. Disconnect the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal, and wait for at least 90 seconds.

    9. Using a service wire, connector terminals 11 (MSW+) and 12 (MSW-) of connector B.

      Note

      Do not forcibly insert the service wire into the terminals of the connector when connecting a service wire.

    10. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance

    11. Disconnect a service wire from connector B.

    12. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance

      F33-2 (PMC+) - Body ground Always 1 MΩ or higher

  2. INSPECT AIRBAG CUT-OFF SWITCH

    1. Remove the airbag cut-off switch Click here.

    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance
      Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
      2 (PMC+) - 1 (PMC-) Cut off switch is in "ON" position (Front passenger side airbag is active) 360 to 440 Ω
      2 (PMC+) - 1 (PMC-) Cut off switch is in "OFF" position (Front passenger side airbag is not active) 90 to 110 Ω

  3. CHECK CENTER AIRBAG SENSOR

    1. Connect the connectors to the center airbag sensor and the airbag cut-off switch.

    2. Connect the cable to the negative (-) battery terminal, and wait for at least 2 seconds.

    3. Turn the engine switch on (IG), and wait for at least 60 seconds.

    4. Clear the DTCs stored in memory Click here.

    5. Turn the engine switch off.

    6. Turn the engine switch on (IG), and wait for at least 60 seconds.

    7. Check the DTCs Click here.

      OK
      DTC B1651 is not output.

      Codes other than DTC B1651 may be output at this time, but they are not related to this check.

  4. CHECK INSTRUMENT PANEL WIRE (CENTER AIRBAG SENSOR - NO. 2 INSTRUMENT PANEL WIRE)

    1. Disconnect the instrument panel wire connector from the No. 2 instrument panel wire.

    2. Connect the cable to the negative (-) battery terminal, and wait for at least 2 seconds.

    3. Turn the engine switch on (IG).

    4. Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Voltage

      FE4-3 (MSW+) - Body ground Engine switch on (IG) Below 1 V
      FE4-2 (MSW-) - Body ground Engine switch on (IG) Below 1 V
    5. Turn the engine switch off.

    6. Disconnect the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal, and wait for at least 90 seconds.

    7. Using a service wire, connector terminals 11 (MSW+) and 12 (MSW-) of connector B.

      Note

      Do not forcibly insert the service wire into the terminals of the connector when connecting a service wire.

    8. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

    9. Disconnect the service wire from connector B.

    10. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.
