LEXUS PARKING ASSIST-SENSOR SYSTEM SYSTEM DESCRIPTION


  1. GENERAL


    1. When the vehicle is driven at 9 km/h (5.8 mph) or less, the ultrasonic sensors detect any obstacles at the corners and rear of the vehicle. The system then informs the driver of the distance between the sensors and the obstacles as well as their positions by indicating them on the combination meter and by sounding a buzzer.

  2. FUNCTION OF COMPONENTS

    Components Function
    No. 1 ultrasonic sensor The No. 1 ultrasonic sensor sends and receives ultrasonic waves. Based on the received wave, the sensor calculates the approximate distance value between the vehicle and obstacle, and sends the distance value as a signal to the parking assist ECU*1 or clearance warning ECU assembly*2.
    Combination meter assembly

    Transmits a vehicle speed signal to the parking assist ECU*1 or clearance warning ECU assembly*2.

    Receives information from the parking assist ECU*1 or clearance warning ECU assembly*2.


    • Displays the location of an obstacle and the approximate distance between the vehicle and obstacle.

    • Informs the driver if the ultrasonic sensors malfunction, or if they freeze or become dirty.
    Back sonar or clearance sonar switch assembly Built into the drive monitor switch. Outputs the system ON/OFF signals to the parking assist ECU*1 or clearance warning ECU assembly*2.

    • Parking assist ECU*1

    • Clearance warning ECU*2

    • Receives the signals from the ultrasonic sensors and sends the display signal to the combination meter.

    • Receives signals from the ultrasonic sensors and sends the display signal to the multi-display.

    • Receives signals from the ultrasonic sensors and sends the buzzer signal to the No. 1 clearance warning buzzer.
    Park/neutral position switch assembly Sends the signal that activates the LEXUS parking assist-sensor system when the shift lever is moved to R.
    Multi-display assembly

    Receives the information from the parking assist ECU*1 or clearance warning ECU assembly*2 through the CAN.


    • Displays the location of an obstacle and the approximate distance between the vehicle and obstacle.

    No. 1 clearance warning buzzer Sounds the buzzer to inform the driver according to the distance to the obstacle.
    ECM Transmits the shift position signal to the parking assist ECU*1 or clearance warning ECU assembly*2.
    Air conditioning amplifier assembly Transmits the ambient temperature to the parking assist ECU*1 or clearance warning ECU assembly*2.
    Main body ECU (cowl side junction block LH) Transmits the destination signal, dimmer signal and steering information to the parking assist ECU*1 or clearance warning ECU assembly*2.
    Windshield wiper switch assembly Transmits the wiper status signal to the parking assist ECU*1.

  3. OPERATION EXPLANATION


    1. The ECU determines whether the LEXUS parking assist-sensor system should be operated based on the back sonar or clearance sonar switch assembly on/off status, the shift position and the vehicle speed.

    2. When the system operates, the ECU transmits ultrasonic waves from the No. 1 ultrasonic sensors. If these waves encounter an obstacle within one or more of the ranges of the sensors, the waves are reflected back to the sensors, which transmit them to the ECU. Based on this information, the ECU sends signals to the multi-information display, the multi-display assembly and the No. 1 clearance warning buzzer. The approximate distance between the vehicle and the obstacle is then indicated, and the buzzer sounds.
