FRONT AXLE HUB ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION

Tech Tips

  • Use the same procedure for the RH side and LH side.

  • The procedure listed below is for the LH side.

  1. REMOVE FRONT WHEEL

  2. SEPARATE FRONT DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY

    1. A01CED2

Remove the 2 bolts and separate the front disc brake caliper assembly from the steering knuckle.

      Note

Use wire or an equivalent tool to keep the brake caliper from hanging down by the flexible hose.

  3. REMOVE FRONT DISC

    1. A01CEYHE01

Put matchmarks on the front disc and front axle hub.

      Tech Tips

The above step is not necessary when the front disc will be replaced.

    2. Remove the front disc.

  4. INSPECT FRONT AXLE HUB BEARING LOOSENESS

    1. A01CDPK

Using a dial indicator, check for looseness near the center of the axle hub.

      Maximum looseness
      0.05 mm (0.00196 in.)

      Note

Ensure that the dial indicator is set perpendicular to the measurement surface.

If looseness exceeds the maximum, replace the front axle hub sub-assembly.

  5. INSPECT FRONT AXLE HUB RUNOUT

    1. A01CEUG

Using a dial indicator, check for runout on the surface of the axle hub outside the hub bolt.

      Maximum runout
      0.05 mm (0.00196 in.)

      Note

Ensure that the dial indicator is set perpendicular to the measurement surface.

If runout exceeds the maximum, replace the front axle hub sub-assembly.

  6. INSTALL FRONT DISC

    1. A01CEYHE01

Align the matchmarks of the disc and axle hub, and install the disc.

      Note

When installing a new disc, select the installation position where the front disc has minimal runout.

  7. CONNECT FRONT DISC BRAKE CALIPER ASSEMBLY

    1. A01CED2

Install the front disc brake caliper assembly to the steering knuckle with the 2 bolts.

      Torque:
      98 N*m  { 999 kgf*cm, 72 ft.*lbf }
  8. INSTALL FRONT WHEEL

    Torque:
    103 N*m  { 1050 kgf*cm, 76 ft.*lbf }
