DESCRIPTION

The Variable Valve Timing (VVT) system includes the ECM, camshaft timing oil control valve assembly and VVT controller. The ECM sends a target duty-cycle control signal to the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly. This control signal regulates the oil pressure supplied to the VVT controller. Camshaft timing control is performed according to engine operating conditions such as the intake air volume, throttle valve position and engine coolant temperature. The ECM controls the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly, based on the signals transmitted by several sensors. The VVT controller regulates the exhaust camshaft angle using oil pressure through the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly. As a result, the relative positions of the camshaft and crankshaft are optimized, the engine torque and fuel economy improve, and the exhaust emissions decrease under overall driving conditions. The ECM detects the actual exhaust valve timing using signals from the camshaft and crankshaft position sensors, and performs feedback control. This is how the target intake valve timing is verified by the ECM.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

Tech Tips


  • If DTC P0013 is displayed, check the exhaust camshaft circuit for the bank 1 VVT system.

  • Bank 1 refers to the bank that includes cylinder No. 1.

  • If DTC P0023 is displayed, check the exhaust camshaft circuit for the bank 2 VVT system.

  • Bank 2 refers to the bank that does not include cylinder No. 1.

  • Read freeze frame data using an intelligent tester. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can be helpful in determining whether the vehicle was running or stopped, whether the engine was warmed up or not, whether the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, as well as other data recorded at the time of a malfunction.

PROCEDURE


  1. CHECK DTC (DTC P0013 OR P0023)


    1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

    2. Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the tester on.

    3. Clear the DTC after recording the freeze frame data and DTC.

    4. Turn the engine switch off.

    5. Allow the engine to idle and check the DTC.

    6. Check that P0013 or P0023 is output.

  2. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING INTELLIGENT TESTER (CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY OPERATION)


    1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

    2. Start the engine and turn the tester on.

    3. Warm up the engine.

    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Active Test / Control the VVT Exhaust Linear (Bank 1).

    5. Check the engine speed while operating the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly using the intelligent tester.

    1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

    2. Start the engine and turn the tester on.

    3. Warm up the engine.

    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Active Test / Control the VVT Exhaust Linear (Bank 2).

    5. Check the engine speed while operating the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly using the intelligent tester.

  4. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY

      Remove the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly.

    2. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Connect the positive battery terminal to terminal 1 and connect the negative battery terminal to terminal 2. Check the valve operation.

      Valve moves quickly.
    4. Reinstall the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly.

  5. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY - ECM)


    1. Disconnect the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly connector.

    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.
