DESCRIPTION

The VVT (Variable Valve Timing) system adjusts the intake valve timing to improve driveability. The engine oil pressure turns the camshaft actuator to adjust the valve timing. The camshaft oil control valve is a solenoid valve and switches the engine oil line. The valve moves when the ECM applies 12 V to the solenoid. The ECM changes the energizing time to the solenoid (duty-cycle) in accordance with the camshaft position, crankshaft position, throttle position, etc.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

Tech Tips

Read freeze frame data using the intelligent tester. Freeze frame data records the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.

PROCEDURE


  1. CHECK DTC


    1. Clear the DTC after recording the freeze frame data and DTC.

    2. Turn the ignition switch off.

    3. Allow the engine to idle and check for DTC.

    4. Check that P0010 or P0020 is output.

      OK
      P0010 or P0020 is output.

  2. INSPECT CAMSHAFT OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (FOR INTAKE SIDE OF BANK 1, 2)


    1. Inspect the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly (for Intake Side of Bank 1, 2) Click here.

  3. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY - ECM)


    1. Reconnect the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly connector.

    2. Disconnect the ECM connector.

    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance (Check for Open)

      C16-1 - C35-19 (OC1+) Always Below 1 Ω
      C18-1 - C34-19 (OC2+) Always Below 1 Ω
      C16-2 - C35-20 (OC1-) Always Below 1 Ω

      C16-1 or C35-19 (OC1+) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

    4. Reconnect the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly connector.

    5. Reconnect the ECM connector.
