ECD SYSTEM (w/o DPF), Diagnostic DTC:P0500

DTC Code DTC Name
P0500 Vehicle Speed Sensor "A"

DESCRIPTION

Vehicles which are equipped with a manual transmission detect the vehicle speed using the speed sensor. The speed sensor transmits a 4-pulse signal for every revolution of the rotor shaft, which is rotated by the transmission output shaft via the driven gear. The 4-pulse signal is converted into a more precise rectangular waveform by the waveform shaping circuit inside the combination meter. The signal is then transmitted to the ECM. The ECM determines the vehicle speed based on the frequency of the pulse signal.

Tech Tips

Read freeze frame data using the intelligent tester. Freeze frame data records the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.

PROCEDURE

  1. CHECK OPERATION OF SPEEDOMETER

    1. Drive the vehicle and check whether the operation of the speedometer in the combination meter is normal.

      Tech Tips

The vehicle speed sensor is operating normally if the speedometer reading is normal.

If the speedometer does not operate, check it by following the procedure described in Speedometer Malfunction.

    NG
    OK
  2. READ VALUE USING INTELLIGENT TESTER (VEHICLE SPEED)

    1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.

    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and start the engine.

    3. Turn the tester on.

    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Data List / All Data / Vehicle Speed.

    5. Drive the vehicle.

    6. Read the value displayed on the tester.

      OK
Vehicle speeds displayed on tester and speedometer display are equal.

    OK
