8NR-FTS COOLANT(for Intercooler) REPLACEMENT

CAUTION / NOTICE / HINT

CAUTION:

  • When engine assembly and radiator assembly is hot, do not remove the reserve tank cap (for Intercooler) or the radiator drain cock plug (for Intercooler).

  • Fluid and steam may spray out due to high pressure, possibly resulting in burns.

    2. A001U3CC01
      *a Hose

Connect a hose with an inside diameter of 9 mm (0.354 in.) to the radiator drain cock plug (for Intercooler) as shown in the illustration.

    3. A001TNIC01
*1 Reservoir Tank Cap (for Intercooler)
*2 Radiator Drain Cock Plug (for Intercooler)

Loosen the radiator drain cock plug (for Intercooler).

    4. Remove the reservoir tank cap (for Intercooler). Then drain the coolant (for Intercooler).

      Tech Tips

Collect the coolant in a container and dispose of it according to the regulations in your area.

    5. Tighten the radiator drain cock plug (for Intercooler) by hand.

    6. Disconnect the hose from the radiator drain cock plug (for Intercooler).

  2. ADD COOLANT (for Intercooler)

    1. When using the GTS:

      1. Remove the reservoir tank cap (for Intercooler).

      2. Slowly pour coolant into the intercooler reservoir assembly until it reaches the FULL line.

        Standard Capacity
1.9 liters (2.0 US qts, 1.7 Imp. qts)

        Note

Do not substitute plain water for coolant.

        Tech Tips

TOYOTA vehicles are filled with TOYOTA SLLC at the factory. In order to avoid damaging the engine cooling system and other technical problems, only use TOYOTA SLLC or similar high quality ethylene glycol based non-silicate, non-amine, non-nitrite, non-borate coolant with long-life hybrid organic acid technology (coolant with long-life hybrid organic acid technology is a combination of low phosphates and organic acids).

      3. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

      4. Turn the ignition switch to ON.

      5. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Active Test / Control the Intercooler Water Pump

Powertrain > Engine > Active Test
        Tester Display
        Control the Intercooler Water Pump
      6. A001X8KC01
        *a FULL Line

While adding coolant so that the coolant level is kept near the FULL line, activate the electric water pump assembly for approximately 1 minute and then stop pump operation for 1 minute. Repeat this operation approximately 3 times until the operation sound of the electric water pump assembly reduces and no more bubbles are visible in the intercooler reservoir assembly or the coolant level in the intercooler reservoir assembly stabilizes.

        OK
The operation sound of the electric water pump assembly reduces and no more bubbles are visible in the intercooler reservoir assembly or the coolant level in the intercooler reservoir assembly stabilizes.

        Tech Tips

If the intercooler reservoir assembly is filled excessively with coolant, coolant may overflow when the electric water pump assembly is stopped.

      7. When no more bubbles are visible in the intercooler reservoir assembly or the coolant level in the intercooler reservoir assembly has stabilized, add coolant to the FULL line, and install the reservoir tank cap (for Intercooler).

    2. When not using the GTS:

      1. Remove the reservoir tank cap (for Intercooler).

      2. A001TPAC01
        *a B Line

Add coolant to the intercooler reservoir assembly filler opening until it is filled to the B line at the base of the intercooler reservoir filler neck.

        Standard Capacity
1.9 liters (2.0 US qts, 1.7 Imp. qts)

        Note

Do not substitute plain water for coolant.

        Tech Tips

        • The B line is the lower edge of the inner wall of the filler neck.

        • TOYOTA vehicles are filled with TOYOTA SLLC at the factory.

      3. Install the reservoir tank cap (for Intercooler). [*1]

      4. Start the engine. [*2]

      5. Operate the electric water pump assembly by running the engine at 2000 rpm or higher with the shift lever in N or P for 1 minute and then stop pump operation for 1 minute. Repeat this operation approximately 3 times until the operation sound of the electric water pump assembly reduces and no more bubbles are visible in the intercooler reservoir assembly or the coolant level in the intercooler reservoir assembly stabilizes. [*3]

        CAUTION:

        • Be careful as the radiator hoses are hot.

        • Keep your hands away from the cooling fans.

        A005QA2

        Note

        • Make sure that the coolant level in the intercooler reservoir assembly does not drop below the LOW line when the engine speed is 2000 rpm or more.

        • Immediately after starting the engine, if the intercooler reservoir assembly runs out of coolant, stop the engine, wait until the coolant has cooled down, and add coolant until it reaches the B line.

      6. Stop the engine and wait until the coolant has cooled down to ambient temperature. [*4]

      7. Check that the coolant level is between the FULL and LOW line. [*5]

If the coolant level is below the LOW line, add coolant to the intercooler reservoir assembly until it reaches the FULL line, and repeat steps from [*1] to [*5].

If the coolant level is above the FULL line, drain coolant so that the coolant level is between the FULL and LOW line.

  3. INSPECT FOR COOLANT LEAK (for Intercooler)
