DESCRIPTION

The grille shutter system is composed of the radiator shutter sub-assembly and grille shutter ECU (swing grille actuator assembly).

When the certain vehicle conditions are met, the grille shutter system operates the swing grille actuator assembly to open and close the radiator shutter sub-assembly and control the volume of air flowing through the radiator assembly into the engine compartment. This results in increased thermal efficiency and increased fuel economy due to reduced aerodynamic drag. This control is performed based on signals received via CAN communication: vehicle speed signal, engine coolant temperature signal, hybrid inverter coolant temperature signal, ambient temperature signal, refrigerant pressure and brake (B) shift state request signal.

If the grille shutter ECU (swing grille actuator assembly) detects a malfunction in itself or any of the mechanical components of the grille shutter system, it will output a malfunction signal to the ECM and the ECM will store a DTC.

Closing Operation Control The grille shutter closes when certain conditions related to the vehicle speed, engine coolant temperature, inverter coolant temperature, ambient temperature and refrigerant pressure are met.
Opening Operation Control The grille shutter opens when certain conditions related to the vehicle speed, engine coolant temperature, inverter coolant temperature, ambient temperature and refrigerant pressure are met.
Power Switch Off-linked Opening Operation Control Power Switch Off-linked Opening Operation Control
Power Switch On (IG) Closing/Opening Operation If the detection conditions of a DTC are met during a trip, the next time the power switch is turned on (IG), a grille shutter opening and closing operation will be performed in order to judge if the malfunction still exists.
Brake (B) Shift State-linked Opening Control Opens the grille shutter to assist braking when brake (B) is selected.
Snow Blockage Control Operation If the radiator shutter sub-assembly becomes stuck closed due to being frozen or blocked by snow, grille shutter control will be suspended to protect the grille shutter motor (swing grille actuator assembly). If the vehicle is driven in a cold environment where the radiator shutter sub-assembly may be frozen and stuck closed, the malfunction threshold will be higher than usual.
Retry Operation If a mechanical malfunction is detected during a grille shutter operation, the operation will be attempted again.

Tech Tips

*: For every 65 ms that the ECM receives a grille shutter system malfunction signal from the grille shutter ECU (swing grille actuator assembly) the ECM determines it has received the signal 1 time. If the ECM determines the malfunction signal has been received 17 consecutive times (the signal is received for approximately 1 second continuously), it will store a DTC.

MONITOR DESCRIPTION

If the grille shutter ECU (swing grille actuator assembly) detects that the grille shutter has stopped during an opening or closing operation, due to foreign matter or a malfunction, it will send a malfunction signal to the ECM and the ECM will store a DTC.

CONFIRMATION DRIVING PATTERN


  1. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

  2. Turn the power switch on (IG).

  3. Turn the GTS on.

  4. Clear the DTCs (even if no DTCs are stored, perform the clear DTC procedure).

  5. Turn the power switch off and wait for at least 30 seconds.

  6. Turn the power switch on (IG).

  7. Turn the GTS on.

  8. Enter the following menus: Body Electrical / Grill Shutter / Active Test / Shutter Closing Operation Lock Detection / Data List / Shutter Operation Lock Detection Result for Active Test.

Note

In order to ensure safety, before performing troubleshooting or removing the swing grille actuator assembly or radiator shutter sub-assembly, change the grille shutter control mode to maintenance mode.

Tech Tips

Read freeze frame data using the GTS. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.
