| DTC Code | DTC Name |
|---|---|
| P1E36-450 | Tank Shut Valve 1 Stuck Open or Close |
| P1E38-450 | Tank Shut Valve 2 Stuck Open or Close |
DESCRIPTION
The hydrogen system of the FC system feeds the FC stack with hydrogen, so that the FC stack can generate power. The tank shut valve is a valve that opens or closes so as to allow compressed hydrogen to flow from the hydrogen tank to the FC stack when the system is in operation. The tank shut valve is provided on each of the 2 hydrogen tank assemblies, and it will open when the system starts operating, and will close when the system shuts off.
If either one of the tank shut valves remains stuck open or closed due to mechanical malfunctions, changes in the hydrogen pressure will cause a DTC to set.
The tank shut valve 1 is built into the No. 1 hydrogen tank assembly, and the tank shut valve 2 is in the No. 2 hydrogen tank assembly.
For the circuit diagram, refer to DTC P1E40-450.
| DTC No. | Detection Item | DTC Detection Condition | Trouble Area | Warning Indicate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| P1E36-450 | Tank Shut Valve 1 Stuck Open or Close | Either of following conditions (1) or (2) is met: (1) Tank shut valve is stuck open: Tank shut valve 1 or both tank shut valves cannot close.
(2) Tank shut valve is stuck closed: Tank shut valve 1 does not open.
(1 trip detection logic) |
No. 1 hydrogen tank assembly (tank shut valve 1) | Master Warning Light: Comes on |
| P1E38-450 | Tank Shut Valve 2 Stuck Open or Close | Either of following conditions (1) or (2) is met: (1) Tank shut valve is stuck open: Tank shut valve 2 or both tank shut valves cannot close.
(2) Tank shut valve is stuck closed: Tank shut valve 2 does not open.
(1 trip detection logic) |
No. 2 hydrogen tank assembly (tank shut valve 2) | Master Warning Light: Comes on |
Tech Tips
If both tank shut valves 1 and 2 do not open, the FC system will shut off.
If either one of the tank shut valves does not open, the distance the vehicle can travel will be shorter.
If either of or both tank shut valve 1 and 2 remain stuck open, both DTCs P1E36-450 and P1E38-450 will be output.

Tech Tips
By accessing the "FC Mode" in the freeze frame data, the FC system condition at the time the malfunction occurred can be checked.
*: This is for pre-determination (for stuck closed). Final determination is conducted during the FC Startup Process.
Stuck open malfunction is identified only during the FC Shutdown Process.

CAUTION / NOTICE / HINT
Note
If both tank shut valve 1 and 2 have remained stuck closed, the "Smoothed Value of High-range Hydrogen Pressure" will not increase, and the FC system will be unable to start.
When the vehicle is parked with the power switch off, if the FC control ECU judges that the FC stack temperature will go below 0°C (32°F), it activates the FC air compressor, hydrogen pump and FC cooling water pump for a maximum of 180 seconds and drains water from the FC stack assembly. When performing inspection or repairs with the power switch off (not on (IG) or on (READY)), disconnect the cable from the negative (-) auxiliary battery terminal before performing work (If the auxiliary battery voltage is needed to conduct inspection, warm up the FC system beforehand).
Tech Tips
Forcing the SOC of the EV battery to decrease by applying electrical loads such as turning on the air conditioning (HOT MAX, maximum airflow), or depressing the accelerator pedal with the shift lever in P, the "FC Intermittent Operation" of the Data List is easily to enter OFF (power generation mode).
Operations after repair:
- If only P1E36-450 or P1E38-450 is output (tank shut valve has stuck closed), clear the DTC and then perform the following instructions to check if the tank shut valve operates.
Turn the power switch on (READY) with the shift lever in P, and check the Data List that "FC Mode" is FC Working.
Record the "Smoothed Value of High-range Hydrogen Pressure" of the Data List. (1)
Turn the power switch off and wait for 3 minutes or more.*1
Disconnect the R3 No. 2 hydrogen tank assembly (tank shut valve 2) connector.
Turn the power switch on (READY).
Note
Perform operations (2) and (3) instructed below within 5 seconds of turning the power switch on (READY).
Read the "Smoothed Value of High-range Hydrogen Pressure" of the Data List. (2)
Turn the power switch off.*1 (3)
Check that the value obtained in operation (2) is close to the value recorded in operation (1).
Tech Tips
If the "Smoothed Value of High-range Hydrogen Pressure" of the Data List does not increase up to the recorded value in operation (1), tank shut valve 1 has stuck closed.
Reconnect the R3 No. 2 hydrogen tank assembly (tank shut valve 2) connector.
Disconnect the R2 No. 1 hydrogen tank assembly (tank shut valve 1) connector.
Turn the power switch on (READY).
Note
Perform operations (4) and (5) instructed below within 5 seconds of turning the power switch on (READY).
Read the "Smoothed Value of High-range Hydrogen Pressure" of the Data List. (4)
Turn the power switch off.*1 (5)
Check that the value obtained in operation (4) is close to the value recorded in operation (1).
Tech Tips
If the "Smoothed Value of High-range Hydrogen Pressure" of the Data List does not increase up to the recorded value in operation (1), tank shut valve 2 has stuck closed.
Reconnect the R2 No. 1 hydrogen tank assembly (tank shut valve 1) connector.
Clear the DTCs.
Note
Disconnecting the hydrogen tank assembly connector may cause DTCs to be set. Thus, check for DTCs and clear them after completion of the operations.
If the No. 1 (or No. 2) hydrogen tank assembly connector is disconnected (tank shut valve is closed) when tank shut valve 1 (or 2) has stuck closed, the hydrogen supply to the hydrogen supply line will be blocked even when the power switch is on (READY). At this time, "Hydrogen Empty Low Level" may be stored in the vehicle control history, so check the vehicle control history after completion of repair, and delete it before returning the vehicle to the customer if it is recorded.
*1: After the power switch is turned off, the "Smoothed Valve of High-range Hydrogen Pressure" is reduced to depressurized by 5000 to 10000 kPa due to system shutdown control.
- If both P1E36-450 and P1E38-450 are output (tank shut valve has stuck open), clear the DTCs and then perform the following instructions to check that the DTCs are not output.
Turn the power switch on (READY) with the shift lever in P, and check the Data List that "FC Mode" is FC Working.
Turn the power switch off and wait for 3 minutes or more.
Turn the power switch on (READY).
