FRONT DIFFERENTIAL CARRIER OIL SEAL REPLACEMENT

  1. REMOVE NO. 1 ENGINE UNDER COVER

  2. REMOVE NO. 2 ENGINE UNDER COVER

  3. DRAIN DIFFERENTIAL OIL

    Click here

  4. REMOVE FRONT PROPELLER SHAFT ASSEMBLY

  5. REMOVE FRONT DRIVE PINION COMPANION FLANGE NUT

      Using SST and a hammer, loosen the staked part of the front drive pinion companion flange nut.

      Using SST to hold the companion flange, remove the front drive pinion companion flange nut.

  6. REMOVE FRONT DRIVE PINION COMPANION FLANGE SUB-ASSEMBLY WITH DUST DEFLECTOR

      Using SST, remove the front drive pinion companion flange sub-assembly with dust deflector.

      Note

      Before using SST (center bolt), apply hypoid gear oil to its threads and tip.

  7. REMOVE FRONT DIFFERENTIAL CARRIER OIL SEAL

      *1 Front Differential Carrier Oil Seal
      *2 Front Differential Drive Pinion Oil Slinger

      Using SST, remove the front differential carrier oil seal.

  8. REMOVE FRONT DIFFERENTIAL DRIVE PINION OIL SLINGER

      Remove the front differential drive pinion oil slinger from the differential drive pinion.

  9. REMOVE FRONT DRIVE PINION REAR TAPERED ROLLER BEARING

      Using SST, remove the front drive pinion rear tapered roller bearing (inner).

      Using SST, tap out the front drive pinion rear tapered roller bearing (outer).

  10. REMOVE FRONT DIFFERENTIAL OIL STORAGE RING


    1. Using a screwdriver and hammer, tap out the front differential oil storage ring.

  11. REMOVE FRONT DIFFERENTIAL DRIVE PINION BEARING SPACER

      Remove the front differential drive pinion bearing spacer from the differential drive pinion.

  12. INSTALL FRONT DIFFERENTIAL DRIVE PINION BEARING SPACER


    1. B0028PV

      Install a new front differential drive pinion bearing spacer.

      Tech Tips

      Make sure the front differential drive pinion bearing spacer is installed correctly.

  13. INSTALL FRONT DIFFERENTIAL OIL STORAGE RING


    1. Using a brass bar and hammer, tap in a new front differential oil storage ring.

      Note

      Be careful not to damage the front differential oil storage ring.

  14. INSTALL FRONT DRIVE PINION REAR TAPERED ROLLER BEARING

      Using SST and a hammer, install the front drive pinion rear tapered roller bearing (outer).

    2. Install the front drive pinion rear tapered roller bearing (inner).

  15. INSTALL FRONT DIFFERENTIAL DRIVE PINION OIL SLINGER

      Install the front differential drive pinion oil slinger to the differential drive pinion.

  16. INSTALL FRONT DIFFERENTIAL CARRIER OIL SEAL


    1. Apply MP grease to the lip of a new front differential carrier oil seal.

      Using SST and a hammer, tap in the front differential carrier oil seal.

      2.7 to 3.3 mm (0.107 to 0.129 in.)

  17. INSTALL FRONT DRIVE PINION COMPANION FLANGE SUB-ASSEMBLY WITH DUST DEFLECTOR

      Using SST, install the front drive pinion companion flange sub-assembly with dust deflector.

      Note

      Before using SST (center bolt), apply hypoid gear oil to its threads and tip.

    2. Apply hypoid gear oil LSD to the drive pinion thread and nut seat face.

      Using SST to hold the companion flange, install a new front drive pinion companion flange nut.

      Limit torque value
      370 N*m (3773 kgf*cm, 273 ft.*lbf) or less

  18. INSPECT TOTAL PRELOAD

      Using a torque wrench, measure the preload with the teeth of the drive pinion and ring gear in contact.

      Standard Total Preload (Starting Torque)
      Item Specified Condition
      New bearing 1.3 to 2.9 N*m (14 to 29 kgf*cm, 12 to 25 in.*lbf)
      Reused bearing 1.29 to 2.79 N*m (14 to 28 kgf*cm, 12 to 24 in.*lbf)

      If necessary, disassemble and inspect the differential.

  19. STAKE FRONT DRIVE PINION COMPANION FLANGE NUT

      Using a chisel and hammer, stake the front drive pinion companion flange nut.
