LUBRICATION SYSTEM ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION

CAUTION / NOTICE / HINT

CAUTION:

  • B00697X

To prevent injury due to contact with an operating fan and generator V-belt or cooling fan, keep your hands and clothing away from the fan and generator V-belt and cooling fans when working in the engine compartment with the engine running.

  • B0068AA

To prevent burns, do not touch the engine, exhaust manifold or other high temperature components while the engine is hot.

  • A01SE6K

To prevent burns, do not remove the engine oil pressure switch assembly while the engine is hot.

PROCEDURE

  1. INSPECT ENGINE OIL QUALITY

    1. Check the engine oil for deterioration, water contamination, discoloration or thinning.

If the quality is visibly poor, replace the engine oil and oil filter sub-assembly.

  2. CHECK ENGINE OIL LEVEL

    1. Warm up the engine, and then stop the engine and wait 5 minutes.

    2. Check that the engine oil level is between the engine oil level dipstick low level mark and full level mark.

If the oil level is low, check for leakage and add oil up to the full level mark.

      Note

Do not fill engine oil above the full level mark.

      Tech Tips

A certain amount of engine oil will be consumed while driving. In the following situations, oil consumption may increase, and engine oil may need to be refilled in between oil maintenance intervals.

      • When the engine is new, for example directly after purchasing the vehicle or after replacing the engine.

      • If low quality oil or oil of an inappropriate viscosity is used.

      • When driving at a high engine speed or with a heavy load, when towing, or when driving while accelerating or decelerating frequently.

      • When idling for a long time, or when driving frequently through heavy traffic.

When judging the amount of oil consumption, keep in mind that the oil may have become diluted, making it difficult to judge the true level accurately.

  3. INSPECT OIL PRESSURE

    CAUTION:

    • To prevent injury due to contact with an operating fan and generator V-belt or cooling fan, keep your hands and clothing away from the fan and generator V-belt and cooling fans when working in the engine compartment with the engine running.

    • To prevent burns, do not touch the engine, exhaust manifold or other high temperature components while the engine is hot.

    • To prevent burns, do not remove the engine oil pressure switch assembly while the engine is hot.

      *a Oil Pressure Gauge
      *b Adapter

Remove the engine oil pressure switch assembly.

    2. Install an oil pressure gauge with the adapter.

    3. Warm up the engine.

    4. Measure the engine oil pressure, and check that it is within the standard range.

      Standard Oil Pressure
      Condition Specified Condition
      Idle

      29 kPa (0.3 kgf/cm2, 4.2 psi) or higher

      3000 rpm

      160 to 490 kPa (1.6 to 5.0 kgf/cm2, 23 to 71 psi)

If the result is not as specified, check the quality of the engine oil and check the oil paths for clogging. Repair or replace if necessary. If the engine oil pressure is still not as specified, check the timing chain cover sub-assembly.

    5. Remove the oil pressure gauge and adapter.

    6. Install the engine oil pressure switch assembly.
