ECD SYSTEM(w/ Urea SCR System), Diagnostic DTC:P21C5

DTC Code DTC Name
P21C5 Reductant Level Sensor "A" Stuck

DESCRIPTION

The urea pump has a level sensor that detects the position of the surface of the fluid inside the urea tank in order to measure the remaining quantity of urea solution.

Urea solution is used to purify exhaust gas. Therefore, when the remaining quantity of urea solution in the urea tank drops below a fixed value, a message to refill the urea solution is displayed on the multi-information display.

DTC No. Detection Item DTC Detection Condition Trouble Area MIL Memory
P21C5 Reductant Level Sensor "A" Stuck When the system determines that there are fluctuations in the wave surface from the G sensor, vehicle speed, etc., the level sensor value does not change multiple times (1 trip detection logic). Level sensor (urea pump) Comes on DTC stored

CAUTION / NOTICE / HINT

Note

    Handling the urea injector set

  • The urea injector set is a precision instrument. Take necessary precautions for installation and shipping. Do not use the part if it has been struck or dropped.

  • If the urea solution remaining inside the urea injector set dries out, it may become unable to inject urea solution. Therefore, conduct urea tube with heater assembly installation and removal quickly.

  • If the urea solution dries out and deposition occurs, urea may cling to the O-ring of the pipe and cause seal problems. Therefore, clean the urea tube with heater assembly and intake port of the urea injector set with water before attaching them.

  • Perform this procedure in an environment where urea solution will not freeze.

Tech Tips

Read freeze frame data using the GTS. Freeze frame data records the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.

PROCEDURE

  1. CHECK FOR ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P21C5)

    1. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the GTS on.

    3. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes.

    4. Read the DTCs

Powertrain > Engine > Trouble Codes

      DTC P21C5 is output A
DTC P21C5 and other DTCs are output* B

      Tech Tips

*: If any other DTCs (CAN communication malfunctions or open/short circuits) are output, perform troubleshooting for those DTCs first.

  2. READ VALUE USING GTS (REDUCTANT LEVEL)

    1. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the GTS on.

    3. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Data List / Diesel Exhaust / Reductant Level.

Powertrain > Engine > Data List
      Tester Display
      Reductant Level
    4. Check the value of "Reductant Level". If the value of the level is 1, refill the urea solution.

      Tech Tips

      Refill approximately 3 to 5 L.

    5. Disconnect the urea tube with heater assembly from the urea injector set.

      Note

If the urea solution remaining inside the urea injector set dries out, it may become unable to inject urea solution. Therefore, seal the urea injector set with an item such as a cover or rubber cap so that the inside does not dry out.

    6. Prepare a bucket or other receptacle for collecting urea solution from the urea tube with heater assembly.

  3. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING GTS (REDUCTANT DISCHARGE)

    1. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Active Test / Reductant Pump Check (Backward).

    2. Perform the Active Test.

Powertrain > Engine > Active Test
      Tester Display
      Reductant Pump Check (Backward)
    3. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Active Test / Reductant Discharge / Data List / Diesel Exhaust / Reductant Level.

    4. Execute the Active Test and check the urea solution level.

      Note

When the Active Test is executed, urea solution will come out of the urea pipe. Collect the urea solution with a bucket or other receptacle.

Powertrain > Engine > Active Test
      Active Test Display
      Reductant Discharge
      Data List Display
      Reductant Level
    5. Check if the urea solution level decreases during the Active Test.

      Tech Tips

When the level sensor value is stuck, the value does not decrease even when the urea solution is released.

    6. After completing the Active Test, refill approximately 3 to 5 L of urea solution.

      Tech Tips

When the level sensor value is stuck, the value does not increase even when the urea solution is refilled.

    7. Check the urea solution level when the urea solution was drained, and also when it was refilled.

  5. CONFIRM WHETHER MALFUNCTION HAS BEEN SUCCESSFULLY REPAIRED

    1. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the GTS on.

    3. Clear the DTCs.

Powertrain > Engine > Clear DTCs
    4. Turn the ignition switch off and wait for at least 30 seconds.

    5. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the GTS on.

    6. Using freeze frame data, confirm the vehicle condition the moment the DTC was stored, and then drive the vehicle under the same conditions indicated by the data.
