DESCRIPTION

A thermistor is built into the engine coolant temperature sensor and it changes its resistance value according to the engine coolant temperature.

The structure of the sensor and connection to the ECM is the same as that of the intake air temperature sensor.

P0116 Engine Coolant Temperature Circuit Range / Performance

Either of the following condition is met (2 trip detection):

  • When engine is started cold and warmed up, the engine coolant temperature sensor value does not change

  • After the warmed up engine is stopped and the next cold engine start is performed, the engine coolant temperature sensor value does not change

  • Thermostat

  • Engine coolant temperature sensor

CONFIRMATION DRIVING PATTERN

DTC No. DTC Detection Drive Pattern
P0116 With the engine coolant temperature below 60°C (140°F), start the engine and idle it for 5 minutes. Then drive the vehicle at a speed of 40 km/h (25 mph) or more for a total of 5 minutes or more and check that the engine coolant temperature changes by 1°C (1.8°F) or more.

CAUTION / NOTICE / HINT

Tip:

Read freeze frame data using the GTS. Freeze frame data records the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.

    INSPECT THERMOSTAT

    1. Remove the thermostat.

    2. Measure the valve opening temperature of the thermostat.

      Standard opening temperature
      80 to 84°C (176 to 183°F)
      Tip:

In addition to the above check, confirm that the valve is completely closed when the temperature is below the standard.

    3. Reinstall the thermostat.
