PROCEDURE
CHECK BRAKE CYLINDER AND PISTON
Check the rear brake wheel cylinder bore and rear wheel cylinder piston for rust and scoring. If necessary, replace the rear brake wheel cylinder assembly or wheel cylinder piston.
CHECK BRAKE DRUM INSIDE DIAMETER
Using a brake drum gauge or equivalent, measure the inside diameter of the rear brake drum.
Standard inside diameter
---
295.0 mm (11.614 in.)
Maximum inside diameter
---
297.0 mm (11.693 in.)
If the inside diameter is more than the maximum, replace the rear brake drum.
CHECK BRAKE SHOE LINING THICKNESS
Using a ruler, measure the thickness of the brake shoe lining.
Standard thickness
---
5.4 mm (0.213 in.)
Minimum thickness
---
1.0 mm (0.0394 in.)
If the lining thickness is less than the minimum value, or if there is any severe or uneven wear, replace the brake shoe.
Note
If the brake shoes need to be replaced, they must be replaced as a set.
CHECK BRAKE DRUM AND BRAKE SHOE LINING FOR PROPER CONTACT
Apply chalk to the inside surface of the drum, and then grind the brake shoe lining so that it fits together with the drum properly.
If the contact between the drum and the shoe lining is improper, make adjustments using a brake shoe grinder or replace the brake shoe.
