AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SYSTEM, Diagnostic DTC:P0500, P0502, P0503

DTC Code DTC Name
P0500 Vehicle Speed Sensor "A"
P0502 Vehicle Speed Sensor "A" Circuit Low
P0503 Vehicle Speed Sensor "A" Intermittent / Erratic / High

DESCRIPTION

The transmission revolution sensor (SP2) detects the output shaft rotation speed and sends it to the TCM.

Based on the transmission revolution sensor (NT) signal and the transmission revolution sensor (SP2) signal, the TCM controls engine torque and shift timing.

MONITOR DESCRIPTION

The transmission revolution sensor (SP2) monitors the output shaft speed.

The TCM controls the gearshift point and the lock up timing based on the signals from the transmission revolution sensor (SP2) and throttle position sensor.

If the TCM detects no signal from the transmission revolution sensor (SP2) even while the vehicle is moving, it will conclude that is a malfunction of the transmission revolution sensor (SP2).

The TCM will illuminate the MIL and store a DTC.

  1. DATA LIST

    Note

In the table below, the values listed under "Normal Condition" are reference values. Do not depend solely on these reference values when deciding whether a part is faulty or not.

    Tech Tips

Using the GTS to read the Data List allows the values or states of switches, sensors, actuators and other items to be read without removing any parts. This non-intrusive inspection can be very useful because intermittent conditions or signals may be discovered before parts or wiring is disturbed. Reading the Data List information early in troubleshooting is one way to save diagnostic time.

    1. Warm up the engine.

    2. Turn the engine switch off.

    3. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

    4. Turn the engine switch on (IG).

    5. Turn the GTS on.

    6. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / ECT / Data List / SPD (SP2).

    7. Read the Data List according to the display on the GTS.

Powertrain > ECT > Data List
Tester Display Measurement Item Range Normal Condition Diagnostic Note
      SPD (SP2) Output shaft speed

      Min.: 0 km/h (0 mph)

      Max.: 255 km/h (158 mph)

      Vehicle stopped: 0 km/h (0 mph)

(output shaft speed is equal to vehicle speed)

      -

Powertrain > ECT > Data List
      Tester Display
      SPD (SP2)

      Tech Tips

      • SPD (SP2) is always 0 while driving: Open or short in the sensor or circuit.

      • The SPD (SP2) value displayed on the GTS is much lower than the actual vehicle speed: Sensor malfunction, improper installation, or intermittent connection malfunction of the circuit.

    Inspection Procedure
Transmission Control Switch Test With the vehicle stationary and the shift lever in D, move the shift lever to M and return it to D. Check that the meter display changes from D to the appropriate M and then back again.
M Position Test While driving with the shift lever in M, operate the shift paddle to "+" and "-". Check that the meter display changes accordingly.
D Position Shift Test While driving the vehicle normally, check that the transmission shifts up and down through each gear properly.
Lock-up Function While driving on a level surface at a constant speed in the lock-up range with the shift lever in D, lightly depress the accelerator pedal and check that the engine speed does not change abruptly.
P Position Test Stop the vehicle on an incline (approximately 5° or more). Then move the shift lever to P and release the parking brake. Check that the parking lock pawl holds the vehicle in place.
Abnormal Noise and Vibration Check for abnormal noise and vibration while driving the vehicle forward and backward, and during shift operations.
Fluid Leakage After performing all other road test inspections, check for fluid leakage.
