DESCRIPTION
The VVT sensors use a timing rotor (installed on each camshaft) and a Magnetic Resistance Element (MRE) type VVT sensor. The timing rotor (camshaft) has 3 protrusions. When it rotates, the magnetic vector (direction of magnetic field) applied to the VVT sensor magnetic resistance element varies, which causes its resistance to vary. This varying resistance is converted to voltage, and then modified into a rectangular waveform with Hi (approximately 4 V) and Lo (approximately 1 V) outputs. As a result, the actual camshaft position is detected and the position is output to the ECM.

MONITOR DESCRIPTION
If no pulse signal is transmitted by the VVT sensor (for intake camshaft) despite the camshaft rotating, or the rotation of the camshaft and the crankshaft is not synchronized, the ECM interprets this as a malfunction of the sensor.
Also, when the sensor output voltage remains at less than 0.3 V, or higher than 4.7 V for 4 seconds, the ECM stores a DTC.

CONFIRMATION DRIVING PATTERN
Connect the GTS to the DLC3.
Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the GTS on.
Clear the DTCs (even if no DTCs are stored, perform the clear DTC procedure).
Turn the engine switch off and wait for at least 30 seconds.
Turn the engine switch on (IG) and turn the GTS on.
Start the engine.
Idle the engine for 10 seconds or more [A].
Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes [B].
Read the pending DTCs.
If a pending DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning.
If a pending DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.
Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Utility / All Readiness.
Input the DTC: P0340, P0342, P0343, P0345, P0347 or P0348.
Check the DTC judgment result.
| GTS Display | Description |

If the judgment result shows NORMAL, the system is normal.
If the judgment result shows ABNORMAL, the system has a malfunction.
If the judgment result shows INCOMPLETE or N/A, perform steps [A] and [B] again.
CAUTION / NOTICE / HINT
If no problem is found through this diagnostic troubleshooting procedure, there may be a mechanical problem with the engine.
Bank 1 refers to the bank that includes the No. 1 cylinder*.
*: The No. 1 cylinder is the cylinder which is farthest from the transmission.
Bank 2 refers to the bank that does not include the No. 1 cylinder.
Read freeze frame data using the GTS. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.

Remove the cylinder head covers.
Turn the crankshaft pulley, and align its groove with the timing mark "0" of the timing chain cover.
Check that the timing marks of the camshaft timing gears and camshaft timing exhaust gears are at the positions shown in the illustration.
| OK |
|---|
| The timing marks on the camshaft timing gears are aligned as shown in the illustration. |
If the result is not as specified, check for mechanical malfunctions that may have affected the valve timing, such as a jumped tooth or stretching of the timing chain.
When checking the valve timing, make sure the camshaft timing gear assemblies are set to the most retarded position and the camshaft timing exhaust gear assemblies are set to the most advanced position. When the VVT system is normal and the engine is stopped, the camshaft timing gear assemblies stop at the center of their operation range and the camshaft timing exhaust gear assemblies stop at the most advanced position.
