ENGINE UNIT REASSEMBLY

PROCEDURE


  1. INSTALL WATER INLET PIPE


    1. B004007

      Install the water inlet pipe with the 2 bolts.

      Torque:
      10 N*m  { 102 kgf*cm, 7 ft.*lbf }
  2. INSTALL NO. 2 CYLINDER HEAD GASKET

    Click here

  3. INSTALL CYLINDER HEAD LH


    1. Place the cylinder head LH onto the cylinder block sub-assembly.

      Note


      • Do not allow oil to adhere to the bottom of the cylinder head LH.

      • Gently lower the cylinder head LH in order not to damage the No. 2 cylinder head gasket with the bottom of the cylinder head LH.

      Tech Tips

      The cylinder head set bolts are tightened in 3 progressive steps.

    2. Apply a light coat of engine oil to the threads and under the heads of the cylinder head set bolts.

    3. Step 1:

        Using a 10 mm bi-hexagon socket wrench, install and uniformly tighten the 8 cylinder head set bolts with 8 cylinder head set plate washers in several steps in the order shown in the illustration.

        Torque:
        36 N*m  { 367 kgf*cm, 27 ft.*lbf }
    4. Step 2:

        *b Paint Mark
        B003ZIE Front of Engine

        Mark each cylinder head set bolt head with paint as shown in the illustration.

      2. Tighten the cylinder head set bolts 90° in the order shown in step 1.

    5. Step 3:


      1. Tighten the cylinder head set bolts an additional 90° in the order shown in step 1.

      2. Check that the paint marks are now facing rearward.

      Tighten the 2 bolts in the order shown in the illustration.

      Torque:
      30 N*m  { 306 kgf*cm, 22 ft.*lbf }

  4. INSTALL CYLINDER HEAD GASKET

  5. INSTALL CYLINDER HEAD SUB-ASSEMBLY


    1. Place the cylinder head sub-assembly onto the cylinder block sub-assembly.

      Note


      • Do not allow oil to adhere to the bottom of the cylinder head sub-assembly.

      • Gently lower the cylinder head sub-assembly in order not to damage the cylinder head gasket with the bottom of the cylinder head sub-assembly.

      Tech Tips

      The cylinder head set bolts are tightened in 3 progressive steps.

    2. Apply a light coat of engine oil to the threads and under the heads of the cylinder head set bolts.

    3. Step 1:

        Using a 10 mm bi-hexagon socket wrench, install and uniformly tighten the 8 cylinder head set bolts with cylinder head set plate washers in several steps in the order shown in the illustration.

    4. Step 2:

        Mark each cylinder head set bolt head with paint as shown in the illustration.

      2. Tighten the cylinder head set bolts 90° in the order shown in step 1.

    5. Step 3:


      1. Tighten the cylinder head set bolts an additional 90° in the order shown in step 1.

      2. Check that the paint marks are now facing rearward.

  6. INSTALL REAR ENGINE OIL SEAL


    1. Place the rear engine oil seal retainer on wooden blocks.

    2. Apply MP grease to the lip of a new rear engine oil seal.

      Using SST and a hammer, tap in the rear engine oil seal.

      • Keep the lip free from foreign matter.

      • Do not tap in the rear engine oil seal at an angle.

  7. INSTALL REAR ENGINE OIL SEAL RETAINER

      Apply seal packing in a continuous line as shown in the illustration.

      Toyota Genuine Seal Packing Black, Three Bond 1207B or equivalent
      Seal Packing Diameter
      2.0 to 3.0 mm (0.0787 to 0.118 in.)

      Note


      • Remove any oil from the contact surfaces.

      • Install the rear engine oil seal retainer within 3 minutes of applying seal packing.

      • Do not start the engine for at least 2 hours after installation.

      Install the rear engine oil seal retainer to the cylinder block sub-assembly with the 6 bolts.

      Torque:
      10 N*m  { 102 kgf*cm, 7 ft.*lbf }
      Adhesive
      Toyota Genuine Adhesive 1324, Three Bond 1324 or equivalent

      Note


      • Be sure to apply adhesive to the bolts (A) before installing them.

      • Wipe off any seal packing that seeped out from the crankshaft position sensor insert part (B).

  8. INSTALL SENSOR WIRE

      Install the sensor wire to the cylinder head LH and cylinder block sub-assembly with the 3 bolts.

      Torque:
      10 N*m  { 102 kgf*cm, 7 ft.*lbf }
  9. INSTALL VALVE STEM CAP


    1. B003ZHP

      Install the 24 valve stem caps to the cylinder head sub-assembly and cylinder head LH.

      Note


      • Install each part to its original position.

      • Do not drop the valve stem caps into the cylinder head sub-assembly.

  10. INSTALL VALVE LASH ADJUSTER ASSEMBLY


    1. Inspect the valve lash adjuster assembly.

      Install the 24 valve lash adjuster assemblies to the cylinder head sub-assembly and cylinder head LH.

      Note

      Install each part to its original position.

  11. INSTALL NO. 1 VALVE ROCKER ARM SUB-ASSEMBLY


    1. Apply engine oil to the valve lash adjuster assembly tip and valve stem cap end.

  12. INSTALL STRAIGHT PIN (for Bank 2)

    It is not necessary to remove the straight pin unless it is being replaced.

  13. INSTALL CAMSHAFT BEARING CAP SETTING RING PIN (for Bank 2)

    Tech Tips

    It is not necessary to remove the camshaft bearing cap setting ring pins unless they are being replaced.

      Using a plastic hammer, tap 10 new camshaft bearing cap setting ring pins into the camshaft housing sub-assembly LH.

  14. INSTALL NO. 3 CAMSHAFT SUB-ASSEMBLY


    1. Apply a light coat of engine oil to the No. 3 camshaft sub-assembly journals and camshaft housing sub-assembly LH.

    2. Install the No. 3 camshaft sub-assembly to the camshaft housing sub-assembly LH.

      Perform Inspection After Repair after replacing the No. 3 camshaft sub-assembly.

  15. INSTALL NO. 4 CAMSHAFT SUB-ASSEMBLY


    1. Apply a light coat of engine oil to the No. 4 camshaft sub-assembly journals and camshaft housing sub-assembly LH.

    2. Install the No. 4 camshaft sub-assembly to the camshaft housing sub-assembly LH.

      Perform Inspection After Repair after replacing the No. 4 camshaft sub-assembly.

  16. INSTALL CAMSHAFT BEARING CAP (for Bank 2)

      Install the 2 oil control valve filters to the 2 camshaft bearing caps.

    2. Apply engine oil to the 5 camshaft bearing caps.

      Install the 5 camshaft bearing caps to the camshaft housing sub-assembly LH.

      Temporarily install and tighten the 8 bolts in the order shown in the illustration.

      Torque:
      10 N*m  { 102 kgf*cm, 7 ft.*lbf }
  17. INSTALL NO. 3 CHAIN TENSIONER ASSEMBLY

      Install the No. 3 chain tensioner assembly to the camshaft housing sub-assembly LH with the bolt.

      Torque:
      21 N*m  { 214 kgf*cm, 15 ft.*lbf }
    2. While pushing down the No. 3 chain tensioner assembly, insert a 1.0 mm (0.0394 in.) diameter pin into the hole to secure it.

  18. SET CAMSHAFT TIMING GEAR ASSEMBLY, CAMSHAFT TIMING EXHAUST GEAR ASSEMBLY AND NO. 2 CHAIN SUB-ASSEMBLY (for Bank 2)

      Align the mark plates (yellow) with the timing marks of the camshaft timing gear assembly and camshaft timing exhaust gear assembly as shown in the illustration.

    2. Align the straight pins of the No. 3 camshaft sub-assembly and No. 4 camshaft sub-assembly with the pin holes of the camshaft timing gear assembly and camshaft timing exhaust gear assembly. Temporarily install the camshaft timing gear assembly and camshaft timing exhaust gear assembly with the No. 2 chain sub-assembly installed.

      Note

      Be careful not to damage the contact surface of the camshaft timing gear assembly and camshaft timing exhaust gear assembly with the straight pins of the No. 3 camshaft sub-assembly and No. 4 camshaft sub-assembly.

      • Do not add engine oil for at least 2 hours after installation.

      • Do not start the engine for at least 2 hours after installation.

    3. Install the camshaft housing sub-assembly LH and tighten the 15 bolts in the order shown in the illustration.

      Note


      • When installing the camshaft housing sub-assembly LH, correctly position the camshafts as shown in the illustration. Failure to do so may result in damage due to contact between the pistons and valves. If a camshaft is rotated, valve contact with a piston at TDC may occur.

      • Make sure that the No. 1 valve rocker arm sub-assemblies are correctly installed.

      • If it is necessary to loosen any of the bolts during installation, remove the camshaft housing sub-assembly LH, clean the installation surfaces, and reapply seal packing.

      • If it is necessary to remove the camshaft housing sub-assembly LH during installation, make sure that the previously applied seal packing does not enter any oil passages.

  22. TIGHTEN CAMSHAFT TIMING GEAR BOLT (for Intake Side of Bank 2)

      Using a wrench to hold the hexagonal portion of the No. 3 camshaft sub-assembly, tighten the camshaft timing gear bolt of the camshaft timing gear assembly.

      Torque:

      Note

      Be careful not to damage the No. 3 camshaft sub-assembly, camshaft housing sub-assembly LH or spark plug tube with the wrench.

  23. TIGHTEN CAMSHAFT TIMING GEAR BOLT (for Exhaust Side of Bank 2)

      Using a wrench to hold the hexagonal portion of the No. 4 camshaft sub-assembly, tighten the camshaft timing gear bolt of the camshaft timing exhaust gear assembly.

      Note

      Be careful not to damage the No. 4 camshaft sub-assembly, camshaft housing sub-assembly LH or spark plug tube with the wrench.

    2. Remove the pin from the No. 3 chain tensioner assembly.

  24. INSTALL STRAIGHT PIN (for Bank 1)

    It is not necessary to remove the straight pin unless it is being replaced.

  30. SET CAMSHAFT TIMING GEAR ASSEMBLY, CAMSHAFT TIMING EXHAUST GEAR ASSEMBLY AND NO. 2 CHAIN SUB-ASSEMBLY (for Bank 1)

  35. TIGHTEN CAMSHAFT TIMING GEAR BOLT (for Exhaust Side of Bank 1)

      Using a wrench to hold the hexagonal portion of No. 2 camshaft, tighten the camshaft timing gear bolt of the camshaft timing exhaust gear assembly.

      Torque:

      Note

      Be careful not to damage the No. 2 camshaft, camshaft housing sub-assembly or spark plug tube with the wrench.

    2. Remove the pin from the No. 2 chain tensioner assembly.

  36. INSTALL CRANKSHAFT TIMING GEAR KEY

      Install the 2 crankshaft timing gear keys to the crankshaft.

  37. INSTALL CRANKSHAFT TIMING SPROCKET

      Install the crankshaft timing sprocket to the crankshaft.

  38. INSTALL NO. 2 CHAIN VIBRATION DAMPER

      Install the 2 No. 2 chain vibration dampers to the cylinder head LH and cylinder head sub-assembly.

  39. INSTALL NO. 1 CHAIN VIBRATION DAMPER

      Install the No. 1 chain vibration damper to the cylinder head LH and cylinder block sub-assembly with the 2 bolts.

      Torque:
      22.5 N*m  { 229 kgf*cm, 17 ft.*lbf }
  40. INSTALL IDLE SPROCKET ASSEMBLY

      B003ZIE Light coat of engine oil

      Apply a light coat of engine oil to the rotating surface of the No. 1 idle gear shaft.

    2. Temporarily install the No. 1 idle gear shaft and idle sprocket assembly with the No. 2 idle gear shaft while aligning the knock pin of the No. 1 idle gear shaft with the pin hole of the cylinder block sub-assembly.

      Note

      Make sure to install the No. 1 idle gear shaft installation in the correct direction.

      Tech Tips

      Check that there is no foreign matter on the No. 1 idle gear shaft or No. 2 idle gear shaft.

    3. Using a 10 mm hexagon socket wrench, tighten the No. 2 idle gear shaft.

      Torque:
      60 N*m  { 612 kgf*cm, 44 ft.*lbf }

      Tech Tips

      After installing the idle sprocket assembly, check that the idle sprocket assembly turns smoothly.

  41. INSTALL CHAIN SUB-ASSEMBLY

      Align the mark plates and timing marks as shown in the illustration and install the chain sub-assembly.

      Tech Tips

      The camshaft mark plates are yellow.

      Temporarily place the chain sub-assembly on the crankshaft as shown in the illustration.

      Turn the camshaft timing gear assembly on bank 1 counterclockwise to tighten the chain sub-assembly between the banks.

      Note

      When reusing the idle sprocket assembly, align the chain plate with the mark where the mark plate had been in order to tighten the chain sub-assembly between the banks.

      Align the mark plate and timing marks as shown in the illustration and install the chain sub-assembly around the crankshaft timing sprocket.

      Tech Tips

      The crankshaft mark plate is pink.
