CAUTION / NOTICE / HINT
CAUTION:
Before performing pre-disposal deployment of any pop up hood lifter, review and closely follow all applicable environmental and hazardous material regulations. Pre-disposal deployment may be considered hazardous material treatment.
PROCEDURE
PRECAUTION
CAUTION:
A pop up hood lifter assembly may be activated by static electricity. To prevent this, be sure to touch a metal surface with your bare hands to discharge static electricity before performing this procedure.
Never dispose of an undeployed pop up hood lifter assembly.
The pop up hood lifter assembly produces an exploding sound when it is deployed, so perform the operation outdoors and where it will not create a nuisance to nearby residents.
When deploying the pop up hood lifter assembly, always use the specified SST (SRS airbag deployment tool). Perform the operation in a place away from electrical noise.
When deploying the pop up hood lifter assembly, perform the operation at least 10 m (32.8 ft.) away from the pop up hood lifter assembly.
The pop up hood lifter assembly becomes extremely hot when the pop up hood lifter assembly is deployed, so do not touch it for at least 30 minutes after deployment.
Use gloves and safety glasses when handling a deployed pop up hood lifter assembly.
Do not apply water, etc. to a deployed pop up hood lifter assembly.
Always wash your hands with water after completing the operation.
Tech Tips
When scrapping a vehicle equipped with an SRS or disposing of the pop up hood lifter assembly, be sure to deploy the pop up hood lifter assembly first in accordance with the procedure described below. If any abnormality occurs with the pop up hood lifter assembly deployment, contact the Service Dept. of the distributor.
DISPOSE OF POP UP HOOD LIFTER ASSEMBLY (When Installed in Vehicle)
Note
When disposing of a pop up hood lifter assembly, never use the customer's vehicle to deploy the pop up hood lifter assembly.
Be sure to observe the following procedure when deploying the pop up hood lifter assembly.
Tech Tips
Prepare a 12 V battery as the power source to deploy the pop up hood lifter assembly.
Check the function of SST.
Refer to Precaution.
Disconnect the cable from the negative (-) auxiliary battery terminal.
CAUTION:
Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) auxiliary battery terminal to disable the SRS system.
Remove the inverter with converter assembly.

Slide |
Push down the white housing lock and slide the yellow CPA. (At this time, the connector cannot be disconnected yet.)
Push down the white housing lock again and disconnect the connector.
Note
Do not push down the part (A) shown in the illustration when disconnecting the connector.
Install SST.
CAUTION:
Check that there is no looseness in the pop up hood lifter assembly.
After connecting the following SST to each other, connect them to the pop up hood lifter assembly.
Note
To avoid damaging the SST connector or wire harness, do not lock the secondary lock of the twin lock.
| *a | 12 V Battery |
| *b | 10 m (32.8 ft.) or more |
Move SST at least 10 m (32.8 ft.) away from the engine compartment of the vehicle.
Connect the red clip of SST to the positive (+) battery terminal and the black clip of SST to the negative (-) battery terminal.
Deploy the pop up hood lifter assembly.
Check that no one is within a 10 m (32.8 ft.) radius of the vehicle.
Press the SST activation switch to deploy the pop up hood lifter assembly.
CAUTION:
Before deployment, make sure that no one is near the vehicle.
Tech Tips
The pop up hood lifter assembly is deployed as the LED of the SST activation switch comes on.
DISPOSE OF POP UP HOOD LIFTER ASSEMBLY (When not Installed in Vehicle)
Note
Be sure to observe the following procedure when deploying the pop up hood lifter assembly.
Tech Tips
Prepare a 12 V battery as the power source to deploy the pop up hood lifter assembly.
Check the function of SST.
Remove the pop up hood lifter assembly.
CAUTION:
Before removing the pop up hood lifter assembly, wait at least 90 seconds after turning the power switch off and disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) auxiliary battery terminal.
When storing the pop up hood lifter assembly, keep the deployment side facing upward.
| *a | Wire Diameter |
| *b | Stripped Wire Cross Sectional Area |
Using braided wire, tie down the pop up hood lifter assembly to an unneeded tire.
| Wire |
|---|
| Stripped wire cross sectional area |
| 1.25 mm2 (0.0019 in.2) or more |
CAUTION:
If the wire is too thin or an alternative object is used to tie down the pop up hood lifter assembly, it may snap when the pop up hood lifter assembly is deployed. Always use a wire for vehicle use with a cross sectional area of at least 1.25 mm2(0.0019 in.2).
Tech Tips
To calculate the cross sectional area of the stripped wire:
Cross sectional area = 3.14 x (Diameter)2/ 4
| *a | Width |
| *b | Inner Diameter |
Position the pop up hood lifter assembly inside the tire with the pop up hood lifter assembly deployment side facing inward.
| Minimum Tire Size |
|---|
| Width |
| 185 mm (7.28 in.) |
| Inner Diameter |
| 360 mm (1.18 ft.) |
CAUTION:
Make sure that the wires are tight. If there is slack in the wires, the pop up hood lifter assembly may break loose when the pop up hood lifter assembly is deployed.
Always tie down the pop up hood lifter assembly with the pop up hood lifter assembly deployment side facing inside the tire as shown in the illustration.
Note
The tire may be damaged by the pop up hood lifter assembly deployment, so use an unneeded tire.
Install SST.
Connect the SST connector to the pop up hood lifter assembly.
Place the tires.
| *a | Tires (2 or more) |
| *b | Inner Diameter |
| *c | Width |
Place at least 2 tires under the tire to which the pop up hood lifter assembly is tied.
| Minimum Tire Size |
|---|
| Width |
| 185 mm (7.28 in.) |
| Inner Diameter |
| 360 mm (1.18 ft.) |
Note
Do not place the SST connector under the tire because it could be damaged.
Place at least 2 tires onto the tire to which the pop up hood lifter assembly is tied. The top tire should have a wheel installed.
Note
The wheel and tires may be damaged by the pop up hood lifter assembly deployment, so use an unneeded wheel and tires.
Tie the tires together with 2 wires.
CAUTION:
Make sure that the wires are tight. Looseness in the wires will result in the tires breaking loose when the pop up hood lifter assembly is deployed.
Install SST.
