PROCEDURE

1. INSTALL STUD BOLT

   Note

   If a stud bolt is deformed or its threads are damaged, replace it.

   
   

   1. Using an E8 "TORX" socket wrench, install the stud bolts.

      

      *a	Intake Manifold Side	*b	Exhaust Manifold Side
      *c	24 mm (0.945 in.)	*d	13 mm (0.512 in.)
      *e	49.5 mm (1.95 in.)	*f	20 mm (0.787 in.)
      *g	42 mm (1.65 in.)	-	-

      Torque:

      9.5 N*m  { 97 kgf*cm, 84 in.*lbf }

2. INSTALL NO. 2 STRAIGHT SCREW PLUG

   Note

   If water leaks from the No. 2 straight screw plug or the plug is corroded, replace it.

   
   

   1. Using a 10 mm straight hexagon wrench, install 3 new gaskets and the 3 No. 2 straight screw plugs.

      Torque:

      44 N*m  { 449 kgf*cm, 32 ft.*lbf }

3. INSTALL VALVE SPRING SEAT

   
   

   1. Install the valve spring seats to the cylinder head sub-assembly.

4. INSTALL VALVE STEM OIL SEAL

   
   
   1. 

      *1	Gray
      *2	Black
      *a	Intake Side
      *b	Exhaust Side

      Apply a light coat of engine oil to a new valve stem oil seal.

      Note

      Pay close attention when installing the intake and exhaust oil seals. For example, installing the intake oil seal to the exhaust side or installing the exhaust oil seal to the intake side can cause installation problems later.

      Tech Tips

      The intake valve oil seal is gray and the exhaust valve oil seal is black.

   2.

      Using SST, push on the oil seal.

      Note

      Failure to use SST will cause the seal to be damaged or improperly seated.

5. INSTALL INTAKE VALVE

   
   

   1. Place the cylinder head sub-assembly on wooden blocks.

   2. 

      *a	30 mm (1.18 in.) or more

      Apply engine oil to each intake valve over an area 30 mm (1.18 in.) or more from its tip as shown in the illustration.

   3. Install the intake valve, compression spring and spring retainer to the cylinder head.

      Note

      Install the same parts in the same combination to the original locations.

   4. 

      Using SST and wooden blocks, compress the compression spring and install the valve retainer locks.

   5. 

      Using a plastic-faced hammer, lightly tap the valve stem tip to ensure a proper fit.

      Note

      
      

      • Be careful not to damage the valve stem tip.

      • Be careful not to damage the retainer.

6. INSTALL EXHAUST VALVE

   
   

   1. Place the cylinder head sub-assembly on wooden blocks.

   2. 

      *a	30 mm (1.18 in.) or more

      Apply engine oil to each exhaust valve over an area 30 mm (1.18 in.) or more from its tip as shown in the illustration.

   3. Install the exhaust valve, compression spring and spring retainer to the cylinder head sub-assembly.

      Note

      Install the same parts in the same combination to the original locations.

   4. 

      Using SST and wooden blocks, compress the compression spring and install the valve retainer locks.

   5. 

      Using a plastic-faced hammer, lightly tap the valve stem tip to ensure a proper fit.
