BRAKE FLUID BLEEDING

CAUTION / NOTICE / HINT

Note


  • Bleed air with the shift lever in P*1 or neutral*2 and the parking brake applied.

    *1: for Automatic Transaxle

    *2: for Manual Transaxle

  • Bleed air while adding fluid to maintain the fluid level between the MIN and MAX lines of the reservoir.

  • Do not allow brake fluid to come into contact with any painted surface. If contact occurs, wash off the fluid immediately.

  • When bleeding air, select the suitable procedure listed below.

PROCEDURE


  1. REMOVE COWL TOP VENTILATOR LOUVER BRACKET LH

  2. BLEED BRAKE LINE


    1. Remove the brake master cylinder reservoir filler cap assembly.

    2. Add brake fluid until the fluid level is between the MIN and MAX lines of the reservoir.

      Brake fluid
      SAE J1703 or FMVSS No. 116 DOT 3

      Note

      Do not remove the filter from the brake master cylinder reservoir and be sure to fill with new brake fluid to avoid any potential contamination of the brake system. Contamination, for example by dirt particles or mineral oil, could lead to functional brake problems.

    3. Loosen the bleeder plug of the front disc brake cylinder RH.

    4. Repeatedly depress the brake pedal and bleed the air from the bleeder plug of the front disc brake cylinder RH.

      Note

      Add fluid as necessary so that the fluid in the reservoir does not decrease below the MIN level.

    5. After air is completely bled out, tighten the bleeder plug while depressing the brake pedal.

      Torque:
      8.3 N*m  { 85 kgf*cm, 73 in.*lbf }
    6. Bleed the air from the bleeder plug of the front disc brake cylinder LH using the same procedure as for the RH side.

    7. Loosen the bleeder plug of the rear disc brake cylinder RH.

    8. Repeatedly depress the brake pedal and bleed the air from the bleeder plug of the rear disc brake cylinder RH.

      Note

      Add fluid as necessary so that the fluid in the reservoir does not decrease below the MIN level.

    9. After air is completely bled out, tighten the bleeder plug while depressing the brake pedal.

      Torque:
      8.3 N*m  { 85 kgf*cm, 73 in.*lbf }
    10. Bleed the air from the bleeder plug of the rear disc brake cylinder LH using the same procedure as for the RH side.

    11. Check for brake fluid leaks.

  3. BLEED BRAKE SYSTEM

    Note

    Be sure to clean your hands before bleeding from the master cylinder to avoid any potential contamination of the brake system. Contamination, for example by dirt particles or mineral oil, could lead to functional brake problems.


    1. Bleed brake master cylinder

      Tech Tips

      If the brake master cylinder has been disassembled or if the reservoir becomes empty, bleed air from the brake master cylinder.


      1. Remove the brake master cylinder reservoir filler cap assembly.

      2. Add brake fluid until the fluid level is between the MIN and MAX lines of the reservoir.

        Note

        Do not remove the filter from the brake master cylinder reservoir and be sure to fill with new brake fluid to avoid any potential contamination of the brake system. Contamination, for example by dirt particles or mineral oil, could lead to functional brake problems.

      3. A01V9UZ

        Using a union nut wrench, disconnect the 2 brake lines from the master cylinder.

      4. Slowly depress and hold the brake pedal.

      5. A01VAZH

        Block the outer holes with your fingers, and release the pedal.

      6. Repeat the 2 previous steps 3 or 4 times.

      7. Using a union nut wrench, connect the 2 brake lines to the brake master cylinder.

        Torque:
        15.2 N*m  { 155 kgf*cm, 11 ft.*lbf }

        Note

        Use the formula to calculate special torque values for situations where a union nut wrench is combined with a torque wrench Click here.

    2. Bleed brake line


      1. Remove the bleeder plug cap.

      2. Connect the vinyl tube to the bleeder plugs.

      3. Depress the brake pedal several times, and then loosen the bleeder plug with the pedal depressed.

      4. When fluid stops coming out, immediately tighten the bleeder plug. Then release the pedal.

      5. Repeat the 2 previous steps until all of the brake fluid is gone.

      6. Tighten the bleeder plug.

        Torque:
        8.3 N*m  { 85 kgf*cm, 73 in.*lbf }
      7. Install the bleeder plug cap.

      8. Bleed air from the brake line for each wheel by repeating the above procedures.

    3. Bleed VSC actuator assembly

      Note

      After bleeding the air from the brake system, if the height or feel of the brake pedal cannot be obtained, perform air bleeding of the brake actuator with the GTS by following the procedure below.


      Chassis > ABS/VSC/TRC > Utility
      Tester Display
      Air Bleeding

      1. Depress the brake pedal more than 20 times with the engine off.

      2. Connect the GTS to the DLC3, and turn the ignition switch to ON.

        Note

        Do not start the engine.

      3. Enter the following menus: Chassis / ABS/VSC/TRC /Utility / Air Bleeding.

      4. Select and run "Inhalation Line" from the Air Bleeding screen on the GTS.

        Note

        Follow the prompts on the tester screen to bleed the air for both wheels (front and rear) on the right side.

      5. Loosen the bleeder plug of the right front wheel.*1

      6. Using the GTS, operate the actuator.

        Tech Tips


        • To protect the actuator, the operation stops automatically.

        • Make sure the brake pedal is released.

      7. Check the GTS screen to confirm that the operation has stopped.

      8. Tighten the bleeder plug.*2

      9. Repeat the procedures above from *1 to *2 until the air is completely bled out.

      10. Tighten the bleeder plug.

        Torque:
        8.3 N*m  { 85 kgf*cm, 73 in.*lbf }
      11. Bleed the air for the right rear wheel using the same procedure as for the right front wheel.

      12. Select and run "Decrease Line" from the Air Bleeding screen on the GTS.

        Note

        Follow the prompts on the tester screen to bleed the air for all 4 wheels.

      13. Loosen the bleeder plug of the right front wheel.*3

      14. Using the GTS, operate the actuator and at the same time fully depress and hold the brake pedal.

        Tech Tips

        To protect the solenoids, the actuator operation stops automatically in 4 seconds. When operating the actuator repeatedly, follow the prompts on the tester screen and wait for 20 seconds or more between each operation.

        Note


        • At this time, the brake pedal becomes difficult to depress. However, be sure to hold the brake pedal in the fully depressed position until brake fluid comes out of the bleeder plug.

        • Do not repeatedly depress the brake pedal; hold the brake pedal in the fully depressed position.

      15. Tighten the bleeder plug and release the brake pedal.*4

      16. Repeat the procedures above from *3 to *4 until the air is completely bled out.

      17. Tighten the bleeder plug.

        Torque:
        8.3 N*m  { 85 kgf*cm, 73 in.*lbf }
      18. Bleed the air for the other 3 wheels using the same procedure as for the right front wheel.

      19. Repeat the procedure in which air is bled from the brake line by repeatedly depressing the brake pedal.

        Note

        Repeat this step for each wheel until air is completely bled out.

    4. Check for brake fluid leaks.

    5. Check the fluid level in the reservoir Click here.
