PROCEDURE
INSPECT DIFFERENTIAL OIL
Stop the vehicle on a level surface.
Using a 10 mm socket hexagon wrench, remove the rear differential filler plug and gasket.
| *a | 0 to 5 mm (0 to 0.197 in.) |
Check that the oil level is between 0 to 5 mm (0 to 0.197 in.) from the bottom lip of the differential filler plug hole.
Note
After changing the oil seal, drive the vehicle and then check the oil level again.
Too much or too little oil will lead to differential problems.
If there is not enough oil, inspect for oil leaks and fill the differential carrier assembly with Toyota Genuine Differential gear oil LT SAE 75W-85 API GL-5 or equivalent.
Using a 10 mm socket hexagon wrench, install a new gasket and the rear differential filler plug.
DRAIN DIFFERENTIAL OIL
Stop the vehicle on a level surface.
Remove the differential drain plug and gasket.
Drain the oil.
Install a new gasket and the differential drain plug.
ADD DIFFERENTIAL OIL
Remove the differential filler plug and gasket.
Pour oil into the rear differential carrier assembly so that the oil level is within 0 to 5 mm (0 to 0.197 in.) of the bottom of the filler plug opening.
Note
Excessively large or small quantities of oil may cause problems.

Install a new gasket and the differential filler plug.
Drive the vehicle and check the oil level again. If necessary, add differential oil.
