LUBRICATION SYSTEM ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION

PROCEDURE

  1. INSPECT ENGINE OIL QUALITY

    1. Check the oil for deterioration, water contamination, discoloration or thinning. If the quality is visibly poor, replace the oil and filter.

  2. INSPECT ENGINE OIL LEVEL

    1. Warm up the engine, stop the engine and wait 5 minutes.

      *a Measuring Surface
      *b Low Level Mark
      *c Full Level Mark

Check that the oil level is between the dipstick low level mark and full level mark.

If the level is low, check for leakage and add oil up to the full level mark.

      Note

Do not add engine oil above the full level mark.

      Tech Tips

      • Insert the oil level gauge with the measuring surface facing toward the engine as shown in the illustration.

      • A certain amount of engine oil will be consumed while driving. In the following situations, oil consumption may increase, and engine oil may need to be refilled in between oil maintenance intervals.

        • When the engine is new, for example directly after purchasing the vehicle or after replacing the engine.

        • If low quality oil or oil of an inappropriate viscosity is used.

        • When driving at high engine speed or with a heavy load, when towing, or when driving while accelerating or decelerating frequently.

        • When leaving the engine idling for a long time, or when driving frequently through heavy traffic.

When judging the amount of oil consumption, keep in mind that the oil may have become diluted, making it difficult to judge the true level accurately.

  3. INSPECT OIL PRESSURE

    1. Remove the engine oil pressure switch assembly.

      *1 Oil Pressure Gauge

      Install an oil pressure gauge.

    3. Warm up the engine.

    4. Measure the oil pressure.

      Standard Oil Pressure
      Condition Specified Condition
      Idling

      30 kPa (0.3 kgf/cm2, 4.4 psi) or higher

      4000 rpm

      260 kPa (2.7 kgf/cm2, 38 psi) or higher

    5. Remove the oil pressure gauge.

    6. Install the engine oil pressure switch assembly.
