CYLINDER HEAD REASSEMBLY

Tech Tips

Perform "Inspection After Repairs" after replacing the cylinder head sub-assembly.


PROCEDURE


  1. INSTALL STUD BOLT

    Note

    If a stud bolt is deformed or its threads are damaged, replace it.


    1. Using an E8 "TORX" socket wrench, install the stud bolts.

      *a Intake Side *b Exhaust Side
      *c 24 mm (0.945 in.) *d 13 mm (0.512 in.)
      *e 45 mm (1.77 in.) *f 20 mm (0.787 in.)
      *g 35 mm (1.38 in.) - -
      Torque:
      9.5 N*m  { 97 kgf*cm, 84 in.*lbf }

  2. INSTALL NO. 2 STRAIGHT SCREW PLUG

    Note

    If water leaks from the No. 2 straight screw plug or the plug is corroded, replace it.


    1. Using a 10 mm straight hexagon wrench, install 3 new gaskets and the 3 No. 2 straight screw plugs.

      Torque:
      44 N*m  { 449 kgf*cm, 32 ft.*lbf }

  3. INSTALL VALVE SPRING SEAT


    1. Install the valve spring seats to the cylinder head.

  4. INSTALL VALVE STEM OIL SEAL

      *b Exhaust Side
      *1 Gray
      *2 Black

      Apply a light coat of engine oil to a new oil seal.

      Note

      Pay close attention when installing the intake and exhaust oil seals. For example, installing the intake oil seal to the exhaust side or installing the exhaust oil seal to the intake side can cause installation problems later.

      Tech Tips

      The intake valve oil seal is gray and the exhaust valve oil seal is black.

      Using SST, push on the oil seal.

      Note

      Failure to use SST will cause the seal to be damaged or improperly seated.

  5. INSTALL INTAKE VALVE


    1. Place the cylinder head on wooden blocks.

    2. A01QRCHC08
      *a 30 mm (1.18 in.) or more

      Apply engine oil to each valve over an area 30 mm (1.18 in.) or more from its tip as shown in the illustration.

    3. A01QRLPC01
      *a Narrow
      *b Wide

      Install the intake valve, valve inner compression spring and valve spring retainer to the cylinder head.

      Note

      Install the same parts in the same combination to the original locations.

    4. A01QSPLN01

      Using SST and wooden blocks, compress the spring and install the 2 retainer locks.

    5. Using a plastic-faced hammer, lightly tap the valve stem tip to ensure a proper fit.

      Note


      • Be careful not to damage the valve stem tip.

      • Be careful not to damage the retainer.

  6. INSTALL EXHAUST VALVE


    1. Place the cylinder head on wooden blocks.

    2. A01QP3HC06
      *a 30 mm (1.18 in.) or more

      Apply engine oil to each valve over an area 30 mm (1.18 in.) or more from its tip as shown in the illustration.

    3. A01QP8IC01
      *a Narrow
      *b Wide

      Install the exhaust valve, valve inner compression spring and valve spring retainer to the cylinder head.

      Note

      Install the same parts in the same combination to the original locations.

    4. A01QPD3N01

      Using SST and wooden blocks, compress the spring and install the 2 retainer locks.

    5. Using a plastic-faced hammer, lightly tap the valve stem tip to ensure a proper fit.

      Note


      • Be careful not to damage the valve stem tip.

      • Be careful not to damage the retainer.
