DESCRIPTION

The EGR system recirculates exhaust gases. The recirculated gases mix with the intake air so that the EGR system can slow combustion speed and keep the combustion temperature down. This helps reduce NOx emissions.

In order to increase EGR circulation efficiency, the ECM adjusts the EGR valve angle and the throttle valve angle.

  • The target and actual positions of the are different for 20 seconds or more. (2 trip detection logic)

  • While the engine is running, the EGR activation duty exceeds the threshold for 0.5 seconds. (2 trip detection logic)

Condition (C): (EGR valve stuck malfunction)


  • EGR valve position does not move smoothly within the predetermined time of ignition switch being turned from ON to off. (1 trip detection logic)

Drive the vehicle maintaining an engine speed of 3000 rpm or less.


  • Engine coolant temperature 20°C (68°F) or higher

  • "Target EGR Valve Pos" not 0%*
P042E (EGR valve stuck malfunction) Ignition switch from ON to off

*: When "Target EGR Valve Pos" is 0%, drive the vehicle in 4th gear between 90 and 100 km/h (56 and 62 mph) for 30 minutes, and confirm the "Target EGR Valve Pos" is not 0%.

Tech Tips


  • Actual EGR valve opening percentage: Fully closed = 0%, fully open = 100%.

  • If DTC P042E is stored, the following symptoms may appear:


    • Stuck closed malfunction:

    • Lack of power due to fail-safe operation

    • Intake booming noise

    • Slight combustion noise


    • Stuck open malfunction:

    • Black smoke

    • Lack of power

    • Vibration at engine stop

    • Misfire

    • White smoke

    • Engine stall

MONITOR DESCRIPTION

When the target and actual positions of the EGR valve are different, the ECM interprets this as a malfunction of the electric EGR control valve assembly.

Tech Tips


  • If a large amount of carbon deposits exist in the electric EGR control valve assembly, the following parts may also have deposits inside: Intake manifold, EGR with cooler pipe assembly, DPF catalyst, other parts related to the exhaust gas.

  • Be sure to carefully examine "Actual EGR Valve Pos", "Target EGR Valve Pos" and "MAF" in the freeze frame data.

Note

When cleaning the electric EGR control valve assembly or diesel throttle body assembly, use a piece of cloth soaked with cleaning solvent. Spraying solvent directly onto these parts or soaking the parts in solvent may damage the parts.

Tech Tips

Read freeze frame data using the GTS. Freeze frame data records the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.

PROCEDURE


  1. CHECK ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P042E)


    1. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.

    3. Turn the GTS on.

    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes.

    5. Read the DTCs.


      Powertrain > Engine and ECT > Trouble Codes
      Result

      DTC P042E and other DTCs are output B

      If any DTCs other than P042E are output, troubleshoot those DTCs first.

  2. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING GTS (CONTROL THE EGR STEP POSITION)


    1. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.

    3. Turn the GTS on.

    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Control the EGR Step Position / Data List / Target EGR Valve Pos and Actual EGR Valve Pos.

      Target EGR Valve Pos
      Actual EGR Valve Pos

    5. Perform the Active Test.

      OK
      The Actual EGR Valve Pos value follows the Target EGR Valve Pos value.

  3. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING GTS (CONTROL THE EGR STEP POSITION)


    1. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.

    3. Turn the GTS on.

    4. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Control the EGR Step Position.


      Powertrain > Engine and ECT > Active Test
      Tester Display
      Control the EGR Step Position

    5. Check if the valve of the electric EGR control valve assembly opens/closes when the Active Test is performed.

      OK
      The valve opens/closes.

    6. Hold the electric EGR control valve assembly up to a light and visually check that there is no gap between the valve and body.

      Tech Tips


      • If light passes through (there is a gap between the valve and body), replace the electric EGR control valve assembly.

      • Light passes through part A shown in the illustration even if the valve is completely closed. This is not a malfunction.

      • If there are many deposits in the electric EGR control valve assembly or the passage of the intake manifold remove them.

  4. CHECK FOR DEPOSIT (ELECTRIC EGR CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY)


    1. Remove the electric EGR control valve assembly.

    2. Visually check the electric EGR control valve assembly for deposits. If there are deposits, clean the electric EGR control valve assembly.

      Note


      • When cleaning the electric EGR control valve assembly, make sure the valve is completely closed.

      • Do not forcibly open the valve, as it may be damaged or deformed.

      • When cleaning the electric EGR control valve assembly, use a piece of cloth soaked with cleaning solvent. Spraying solvent directly onto these parts or soaking the parts in solvent may damage the parts.

      Tech Tips


      • If the EGR valve does not open properly or is stuck closed, the amount of intake air increases and combustion sounds and engine vibration may increase.

      • If the EGR valve does not close properly or is stuck open, the recirculated exhaust gas becomes excessive and combustion becomes unstable. Also, there may be a lack of power.

    3. Reinstall the electric EGR control valve assembly.

  5. REPLACE ELECTRIC EGR CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY

      Tech Tips

      Before replacing the electric EGR control valve assembly, check the connections of the wire harness and connectors. If there is any abnormality, replace or repair the wire harness or connector.

  6. CONFIRM WHETHER MALFUNCTION HAS BEEN SUCCESSFULLY REPAIRED


    1. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.

    3. Turn the GTS on.

    4. Clear the DTCs.


      Powertrain > Engine and ECT > Clear DTCs

    5. Turn the ignition switch off and wait for 30 seconds or more.

    6. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the ignition switch off.

    7. Start the engine and turn the GTS on.

    8. Drive the vehicle at an engine speed of 3000 rpm or less for 10 minutes.

      CAUTION:

      When performing the confirmation driving pattern, obey all speed limits and traffic laws.

      Tech Tips


      • "Target EGR Valve Pos" is not 0%.

      • When "Target EGR Valve Pos" is 0%, drive the vehicle in 4th gear between 90 and 100 km/h (56 and 62 mph) for 30 minutes, and confirm that "Target EGR Valve Pos" is not 0%.

      • Engine coolant temperature should be 20°C (68°F) or higher.

    9. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes / Pending.

    10. Confirm that the pending DTCs are not output again.
