METER / GAUGE SYSTEM Fuel Receiver Gauge Malfunction

Tech Tips

The fuel level warning light will come on when the fuel level is below 6.8 liters (7.2 US qts, 6 Imp. qts).

PROCEDURE


  1. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING GTS (FUEL METER OPERATION)


    1. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

    2. Turn the power switch on (IG).

    3. Turn the GTS on.

    4. Enter following menus: Body Electrical / Combination Meter / Active Test.

    5. Check the operation by referring to the table below.

  2. READ VALUE USING GTS (FUEL INPUT)


    1. Connect the GTS to the DLC3.

    2. Turn the power switch on (IG).

    3. Turn the GTS on.

    4. Enter following menus: Body Electrical / Combination Meter / Data List.

    5. Check the values by referring to the table below.


      Body Electrical > Combination Meter > Data List
      Tester Display Measurement Item Range Normal Condition Diagnostic Note
      Fuel Input Fuel input Min.: 0 L, Max.: 127.5 L

      Fuel receiver gauge indicates F: 39.6 L

      Fuel receiver gauge indicates 3/4: 31.5 L

      Fuel receiver gauge indicates 1/2: 22.5 L

      Fuel receiver gauge indicates 1/4: 13.1 L

      Fuel receiver gauge indicates E: 4.5 L

  3. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (COMBINATION METER ASSEMBLY - FUEL SUCTION TUBE WITH PUMP AND GAUGE ASSEMBLY)


    1. Disconnect the E46 combination meter assembly connector.

    2. Disconnect the L20 fuel suction tube with pump and gauge assembly connector.

    3. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.

      Standard Resistance
      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      E46-16 (L) - L20-2 (FS) Always Below 1 Ω
      E46-16 (L) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher
      E46-15 (E) - L20-3 (FE) Always Below 1 Ω
      E46-15 (E) - Body ground Always 10 kΩ or higher

  4. INSPECT FUEL SENDER GAUGE ASSEMBLY


    1. Remove the fuel sender gauge assembly.

    2. Inspect the fuel sender gauge assembly.

  5. CHECK CONNECTOR


    1. Visually check for deformation on the fuel suction tube with pump and gauge assembly connector.

      There is no deformation.
